why is it nearly impossible to see a total solar eclipse in colorado?

Question by Lexi2717: why is it nearly impossible to see a total solar eclipse in colorado?
Astronomy Question- Please help

Best answer:
Answer by al_moskowitzI don't know that it is... You just have to be in the right place to be covered by the umbra of the moon (darkest part of the shadow)... I would think it is easier to see from Colorado - you have alot of clear days compared to some other parts of the country...

Q&A: Why is a total solar eclipse unique only to earth?

Question by cthegrayone: Why is a total solar eclipse unique only to earth?
Solar eclipses happen on the other planets with moon(s) in this solar system, but a total solar eclipse, the way it happens on earth, is unique only to this planet...WHY?

I know the answer, l just want to know how many of you know it or have ever wondered about this...

Best answer:
Answer by Mark SBecause the distance and size of the moon between the Earth & The Sun is about perfect for a total eclipse with the 'diamond ring' effect at the end of it.

Prior to the total solar eclipse, you may be able to look at the shadow thrown by a tree onto the ground. Often thousands of small images of the sun in partial eclipse will be visible. How does this happen? Does this phenomena have any thing to do with the term,'Fraunhoffer Diffraction?

How can I set my house up for total solar power?

Question by zaynpevy: How can I set my house up for total solar power?
I am looking to find out how to go about setting my house up for total solar power? I live in the South so sun isn't a big problem for us. I'd really rather be using a sustainable product than keep letting the electric company keep charging me for THEIR gas usage. Exspecially when I see their trucks running all over town to run their daily errands instead of working.

Best answer:
Answer by Justin HYou really cant, it would take large ammounts of space and thousands of dollars in solar panels to even come close to a fraction of what a house uses. also solar panels create DC power which would have to be converted to AC in a dynamo or inverter... and there is always losses do resistance etc.

Also solar panels don't last forever, they have to be replaced every few years depending on the quality so in the end it's cheaper to stay with your local utility provider....no I don't work for one...

Is there different variations of a total eclipse?

Question by Chris: Is there different variations of a total eclipse?
In other words, is the position of the moon during a total eclipse exactly on the same spot everytime? I have heard of an annular eclipse in which the moon appears smaller leaving a thick ring around the moon's shadow. I was thinking maybe there was variations in between the two that are visible to, maybe, a high precision instrument since every total eclipse to the naked eye is exactly the same.
Sorry i meant variation in position as in distance.

Best answer:

Q&A: Is it true that looking at a solar eclipse makes you go blind?

Question by Steven Butterworth: Is it true that looking at a solar eclipse makes you go blind?
If you look at a solar eclipse, is it true that it can burn your eyes and make you go blind? if yes, can you wear some type of glasses to see it?

Best answer:
Answer by eriStaring at an eclipse itself is not dangerous. What's dangerous is when the eclipse ends and the Sun starts coming out from the edge of the Moon - your pupils are open wide because it was dark, so the sudden blaze of light hits your eyes and can do a lot more damage than usual (when you just look up at the Sun normally, your pupils are contracted so not much light gets in). Yes, you can wear eclipse glasses or welders glass to look at it without this problem.

Can there be an eclipse that makes it pitch dark?

Question by Lupe Magallanes: Can there be an eclipse that makes it pitch dark?
Can there be an eclipse that somehow blocks all the suns light and makes it really dark and pitch black even during daytime? do we have any eclipses similar in the past?

Best answer:
Answer by GeneLyes, that one is called a "total eclipse".

And there's one coming up this year...On November 12/13, 2012, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in norther Australia and crosses the South Pacific Ocean with on other no landfall. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.

The one we had yesterday is called an Annular Solar Eclipse and occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most (but not all) of the Sun's light.

Different celestial bodies? I guess one difference is that looking at a solar eclipse without eye protection is dangerous, but looking at a lunar eclipse with the naked eye or through binoculars or a telescope is perfectly safe.

Q&A: Why are solar eclipses shorter than lunar eclipses?

Question by pangalicious: Why are solar eclipses shorter than lunar eclipses?
Lunar eclipses usually last anywhere from like 1-3 hours, whereas solar eclipses are just a few minutes long. Why is this?

Best answer:
Answer by daiquirikisscuz in a solar eclipse the moon is in between the earth and the sun, and since the moon and sun alignment isn't very long lasting, it's short. Where as the lunar eclipse is passing through the earth's shadow, meaning, the earth is in between the sun and the moon. The Earth and sun alignment is much slower moving than the moon, so it lasts longer.

What is the astrological impact of having so many consecutive solar and lunar eclipses?

Question by ḯґḯṧℌ ẘґ☤ṧ⊥ ẘ@☂ḉ♄: What is the astrological impact of having so many consecutive solar and lunar eclipses?
in the next few months we'll have several Solar and Lunar eclipses, one right after another.
June 1 solar eclipse in Gemini
June 15 lunar eclipse in Sagittarius
July 1 solar eclipse in Cancer

These intermixed with a Full moon in Capricorn (July 14ish), new moon in Leo (July 30)

What is the impact of all this activity?

Best answer:
Answer by MichelleThere really isn't enough room to answer this as well as I'd like, so I'll beg your indulgence to give you a taste of what else you can explore after I say some of this.

Eclipses can tell you quite a bit about things going on in your life. For example, not just the Sun and Moon, but even the other planet will help you to see some pictures you may or may not like to see. I still remember one eclipse in particular when Saturn opposed my Mars in my chart. I'll tell you it was by far one of the most miserable experiences in my life, and it kept coming back to haunt me each and every time that degree was touched by transit until the next eclipse rolled by. I no longer remember if it was a Solar or Lunar Eclipse, and in the broader scope of this explanation, it doesn't really matter.

If it takes place during a Solar Eclipse, then you will see this kind of event based on tension or whatever is relevant to the planetary "exchange" with your natal chart each time that degree is touched till the next eclipse of the same type comes into play. You want to take into consideration which houses will be affected as well as the points of your natal chart that will be touched, and note that the greater impact is *usually* going to be with the Sun, but don't ignore the Lunar Eclipse. That too is important.

In 2000, there were 3 eclipses in one month, just as there will be this time. Two weeks before the Solar Eclipse on July 1, 2000, I had a major head injury that required stitches to repair a severed artery. The transiting Moon was opposing the Solar Eclipse point. During the week of the incoming Lunar Eclipse on July 16, I was robbed of all our possessions. Luckily, my children and I weren't there. And on July 31 that year, there was another Solar Eclipse, and I ended up with a gift of over $ 500.

Also be aware that your Pre-Natal Eclipse Points are important. The Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse Point appears to be connected to "fated" encounters with people and events. The Pre-Natal Lunar Eclipse Point requires a bit more attentiveness to see how it affects you. It appears to be linked more broadly through all of the planets in your chart, whichever one is being touched by that eclipse.

Hope this helps a bit.

How to calculate the declination of the Moon?

Question by Montana B: How to calculate the declination of the Moon?
I would like to be able to predict the date of the next lunar eclipse, either via calculator or via a VB.Net program. I already have the declination of the Sun nailed down, so this is the only other thing I would need to make a prediction.
Great post, but I was kind of hoping maybe someone would have a simpler way to calculate this, maybe i'm too lazy but the algorithm seems a little long.

Best answer:
Answer by bikenbeer2000It might be easier to work with ecliptic longitude and latitude, rather than right ascension and declination. That way, the latitude of the Sun is automatically zero and you only need to search for times when the Sun and Moon are 180º apart in ecliptic longitude, with the Moon's latitude less than 1º 37', which means an eclipse is possible. Don't forget that, for lunar eclipses, you're only interested in geocentric positions of the Sun and Moon. For an observer on the Earth's surface, the Moon's coordinates can vary by up to 1º from the geocentric position. Some formulae for the Moon's coordinates are given at this website: http://stjarnhimlen.se/comp/ppcomp.html
[Later]
You could shorten the algorithm, but you would lose accuracy. Referring to the website, if you ignore the perturbations of the Moon, you probably wouldn't miss the dates of many lunar eclipses, but the calculated time might be up to 4 hours out. When writing a program, these perturbation terms can be added as a subroutine, since this stage of the calculation is essentially repetetive.

Is something going to happen between May 20th, 2012 and June 6th or just after?

Question by Michael: Is something going to happen between May 20th, 2012 and June 6th or just after?
I know the solar eclipse is going to happen on may 20 , 2012 but I just saw video saying that theirs going to be a big earthquake and that Nostradamus and Mayans predicted something was going to happen. Is it true what is really going to happen in 2 days I know the solar eclipse but anything else? Should I be worry about? Is the world going to end on December 21, 2012 ? I'm really scare right now

Best answer:
Answer by Vic RattleheadYes, the people that lived 1400 years ago predicted the exact date of the exact natural disaster of something that will happen in a place they didn't even know about at the time using the stars.

...

The Mayan calendar ends December 21, 2012. It's the end of something called the Long Cycle. As soon as it ends, a new one begins. They just didn't record it. It's like the end of the year. The world doesn't end when there are no more days in the year, a new year just starts instead.

Has there ever been a total solar eclipse and total lunar eclipse in the same lunar revolution?

Question by Eric: Has there ever been a total solar eclipse and total lunar eclipse in the same lunar revolution?
I know the moon is inclined about 16 degrees, but I imagine this is possible since the sun's inclination is greater than that.

Best answer:
Answer by ArkaliusThe moon's ecliptic inclination is only about 5.1 degrees. It's equatorial inclination varies over the course of just over 18 years from 18.3 degrees to 28.6 degrees and back again, due to the precession of it's nodes.

In the epoch of human existence, a total lunar and total solar eclipse occurring in the same lunation would be impossible and has not happened. In the distant past, when the moon was closer, and therefore appeared larger, it is likely that it was able to create both total solar and lunar eclipses in the same lunation.

As much detail and links helpful!

Best answer:
Answer by KA new moon is when the moon is directly between Earth and the Sun, and is thus not illuminated at all and invisible to us. A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon, when the moon is exactly opposite the Sun and fully illuminated, but then passes through Earth's shadow, dimming it and making it appear reddish-brown.

Question by Amber: When will the moon and stars align again, and how to tell which stars they are?also when is the next blue moon?
and solar eclipse, also if you know any websites where i can keep updated this this information that would be great thanks so much!

Best answer:
Answer by JayjhisThe moon travels across the sky, and its usually in front of some stars. I don't think I understand this part of the question.

A blue moon just means there are 4 full moons in a season instead of 3. A season is 3 months long and a lunar cycle is a little shorter than a month, so sometimes there is an extra. By this definition, August of 2013 is the next one. It can also refer to two full moons in the same month, which will happen in August of 2012.

What time will the eclipse occur in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday?

Question by jeannie: What time will the eclipse occur in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday?
I've tried figuring it out but all the charts I can find show the totality in Utah, which isn't gonna happen here. So what I need to know is what time do me and my camera need to be ready - PDT? I'm thinking the partial eclipse will occur around sunset, but I'd hate to be wrong.

Best answer:
Answer by campbelp2002The partial solar eclipse will occur late in the day in Southern California on Sunday, beginning at 5:24 p.m., reaching its maximum coverage at 6:38 p.m., and exiting the sun's path at 7:42 p.m., just 10 minutes before sunset. "That means the sun is fairly low in the northwest, and you want a clear view of the northwest horizon," said Griffith Observatory director Ed Krupp.

Question by : what is HMNS Sydney (Australia) ?
i dont know if its spelt HYMNS or HMNS sydney but it would be great help to me if you even just explained briefly what it is.

Best answer:
Answer by JohnI am not absolutely certain but I think it is refering to this below

A total solar eclipse is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events – as the Moon covers the Sun and plunges Earth into darkness. Then the sun’s faint wispy corona creates a glowing ring around the black new moon. Almost every year, thousands of travelers rush to that special place on Earth where the moon’s shadow traces a thin path across the landscape.

Solar eclipse destinations are often exotic, remote and sometimes dangerous. However, in 2012 the prime viewing spot of the solar eclipse is the coast of Australia near the Great Barrier Reef. The Houston Museum of Natural Science has secured a limited number of hotel rooms for this highly sought-after eclipse destination. In addition to the eclipse, this HMNS travel program offers many other the natural wonders in this tour of the South Pacific.

How much power do we get from the sun every day?

Question by Hiya: How much power do we get from the sun every day?
I need to know how much per square inch at any given time and also the amount the sun gives the earth (in total, the sun is always shining some where) each day.

Best answer:
Answer by Donut TimMost of the Sun’s light is radiated in a direction that does not send it to Earth.

Only 0.000000724654% of it reaches the Earth.
That’s 7.24654 billionths of the Sun’s total light.

The Sunlight that reaches Earth is equal to approximately 1,370 watts per square meter (0.884 watts per square inch) when the sun is at zenith. Because of the atmosphere, the amount of energy that reaches the ground is about 1,000 watts per meter (0.645 watts per square inch) when the sun is directly above and no clouds obscure. (One watt is equal to 1 joule (J) of energy per second.)

The total energy from the Sun that hits Earth is 2,787,020,730,988,480,000 watts.
