How do you know if you have retina damage?

Question by : How do you know if you have retina damage?
I watched the solar eclipse on sunday. & I looked at it for a while without any protection. then I put on three pairs of sunglasses. I got my telescope out to get pics & when I was looking through my telescope, it burnt my eye, it happened a few times. from what I read, it says that retina damage is painless. I've been having problems with my eyes. short of going to eye doctor, how can I tell if I have damaged my eyes.

Early Christmas treat: 2010's total lunar eclipse--The moon is normally illuminated by the sun

Early Christmas treat: 2010's total lunar eclipse--The moon is normally illuminated by the sun

LOS ANGELES – 'Twill be nights before Christmas and high overhead, the moon will turn brown or maybe deep red. The Earth and the sun with celestial scripts will conspire to make a lunar eclipse.
Weather permitting, sky gazers in North and Central America and a tiny sliver of South America will boast the best seats to this year's only total eclipse of the moon.
The eclipse will happen Monday night on the West Coast and during the wee hours Tuesday on the East Coast. Western Europe will only see the start of the spectacle while western Asia will catch the tail end.
The moon is normally illuminated by the sun. During a new, the full moon passes through the shadow created by the Earth blocking the sun's light. Some indirect sunlight will still manage to pierce through and give the moon a ghostly color.
Since the eclipse coincides with winter solstice, the moon will appear high in the sky — a boon for skywatchers. With recent volcanic eruptions around the globe dumping tons of dust into the atmosphere, scientists predict the moon may appear darker than usual during the eclipse, glowing an eerie red or brown instead of the usual orange-yellow tinge.
North and Central America should be able to view the entire show, which is expected to last 3 1/2 hours if skies are clear. Total eclipse begins at 11:41 p.m. PST Monday or 2:41 a.m. EST Tuesday. The totality phase — when the moon is entirely inside Earth's shadow— will last a little over an hour.
"It's perfectly placed so that all of North America can see it," said eclipse expert Fred Espenak of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
The Griffith Observatory perched on the south slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles will host an eclipse party Monday evening although rain is forecast. Telescopes will be set out on the lawn for the public and astronomers will give free lectures on the eclipse's various stages.
If clouds or rain set in, the observatory plans to stream live video of the eclipse from the Internet. Among the various outfits that will show the eclipse live is NASA, which has a camera mounted at its Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
"Our event will go on rain or shine," said Griffith Observatory astronomer Anthony Cook.
Unlike solar eclipses which require protective glasses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye.
U.S. Naval Observatory spokesman Geoff Chester finds solar eclipses more exciting than the lunar counterpart. But solar eclipses tend to occur in remote parts of the world while lunar eclipses are usually visible from an entire hemisphere.
"If you get skunked by bad weather, all you have to do is wait a few years for the next one to come around," Chester said.
There are two total lunar eclipses in 2011 — in June and December. North America will miss the June show and witness only a part of next

July 11, 1991 Total Solar Eclipse observed from Mexico (Novillero, La Paz, Mazatlan). Jupiter and Venus were seen during totality and were thought by some to be UFOs. The length of this eclipse was 6 minutes and 53 seconds. The next eclipse this long will be in 2132. There are solar and lunar eclipses every year, somewhere in the world. China and India will experience a long eclipse on July 22, 2009. The next total eclipse for the United States will be in 2017.

Horse Racing's Triple Crown

Horse Racing's Triple Crown

The Triple Crown, like many of the best traditions, wasn't created, it evolved. During the late 1800's three different tracks created races to test the speed and stamina of the new crop of three year olds. The first Belmont Stakes took place in 1867, the first Preakness ran in 1873, and it wasn't until the advent of the Kentucky Derby in 1875 that all three races were run in the same year for the first time. Forty-four years later in 1919 Sir Barton became the first horse to win all three. The term Triple Crown wasn't coined until 1930 when a Daily Racing Form columnist, Charles Hatton, used it while covering Gallant Fox's road to becoming the second Triple Crown champion. In the 133 years that have passed only 11 horses have managed to accomplish what is arguably the most difficult feat in sports. Compared to the Triple Crown, no-hitters in baseball are a common occurrence. There have been more solar eclipses in our lifetime than Triple Crown winners and every year more people are struck by lightening than the total number of Triple Crown winners in history. Some of horse racing's most legendary names failed to capture this event. Man o' War managed only 2 out of the 3 legs, skipping the Kentucky Derby. Seabiscuit, after losing 17 straight races as a two year old wasn't even considered for a Triple Crown start. Seabiscuit did later beat 1937's Triple Crown winner, War Admiral in a match race. Cigar didn't competed, having started his great winning streak late in his fourth year. What makes this event so difficult to win? Several factors must be considered. First there's the age of the horses. Triple Crown races are limited to 3 year olds, all of whom officially have their birthday on January 1st each year. By the time of the Kentucky Derby, though most of the contestants will have actually reached their third birthday, they won't realize their full growth and potential until their fourth or fifth years.Another significant aspect is the brief time between races. Most graded stakes caliber horses of today run with 30 to 60 days off between races, but Triple Crown contenders must run 3 grueling races within the span of 35 days. Races at these distances take a toll on these young horses and it takes some time to fully recover. Sir Barton, the first Triple Crown winner, won the Preakness only 4 days after winning the Kentucky Derby while today's contenders do have 14 days between the two races. Nevertheless, it is quite a strain on their still developing bodies. One of the most important factors is the distances of these races; the Derby is a mile and a quarter, the Preakness, a mile and three sixteenths and the Belmont at a mile and a half, the last and the longest of the three. The horses that survive

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the Moon slipping in front of the face of the Sun on March 4, 2011. This view is in the far ultraviolet and shows lots of solar activity like sunspots (which are bright in the UV) and prominences. The Moon appears to change direction because SDO is orbiting the Earth. This is difficult to explain using just words, so I have created a diagram on my blog. It's the same effect that makes planets seem to reverse direction over several days (called "retrograde motion") or race cars seem to move left-to-right on the near side of the racetrack and right-to-left on the far side.
