How do astronomers predict a solar eclipse time and location at such precise accuracy?

by brunosan
Question by Freezing Temperature: How do astronomers predict a solar eclipse time and location at such precise accuracy?
What instruments do they use? How do they calculate it, roughly speaking?

Best answer:
Answer by Randy PBecause we have knowledge of the exact positions of the sun, moon and earth to very high precision going out many decades. These orbits are perturbed by the existence of the other planets, but computer models can easily account for all that and calculate the orbit to high precision.

It helps that these things are kind of far away from each other. The same kinds of computer models can predict the positions of satellites orbiting close to the earth, which are perturbed not only by the sun and moon (and a tiny bit by the planets), but also by irregularities in the earth's gravitational field caused by the earth being non-spherical and having mass concentrations like mountain ranges.

These perturbations are big enough that the agencies that track stuff in orbit around the earth send out orbital updates EVERY SINGLE DAY to keep everybody's models up to date with enough precision (frequently we're interested in knowing where satellites are down to small fractions of a meter. We don't need that much precision on the moon's position to predict an eclipse).

What Makes Black Friday So Special?

What Makes Black Friday So Special?

Why Black Friday is considered a special day for shoppers? There is a type of madness that occurs the day after Thanksgiving; it is often referred to as Black Friday. This year it falls on the date of November 27, 2009 and for many retailers and business people this is a make or break shopping day, because if the people decide to shop at your store, the value to offer from the discount, is often made out many times over by overall total sales. In truth the shopper will not just find the one item that is the value, no they will often find many items that they want, and decide to make all their purchases at a single location. Now for website owners this is a dilemma because the people part in the physical store, they surf in, find the special and surf on out.So the website owner has to keep the customers on the website for a longer period of time, so even if the prices are not all discounted, the appearance of more than just one product being discounted, is often enough to entice the customer to make more than one purchase. Also the website owner may entice the online customers through e-mail campaigns, and video advertising. These forms are supposed to create an interest from the buyers to land on their page, check out a variety of categories, and hopefully make a large number of purchases. So the website owner must offer a quality site, that is deemed a value to the shoppers, and will be recommended to their friends, and post it on blogs and other forum sites. Caution should be made from the website owner, to prevent the customers from just choosing one product only without trying to up sell them on additional products or accessories. There is also a belief that if using holiday colours, the customer will feel like shopping longer, some websites even decorate with tinsel lights, and festive wall banners. The colour red is often used as well as green to present a Christmas, Yuletide atmosphere. There have been studies to determine which colours make people buy more, some people believe the colour red is not conducive for sales, but the calming effect of blue and green may lead to better sales. Nothing scientific has been ever determined, but it is believed that colour does have a definite effect on sales, so website owners choose your colours wisely if in fact you do change them for the holiday season. The possibility of the up sell is very intriguing to most website owners, because the customer has his credit card out, and is making a purchase, so why not offer additional items that will complement their purchase? All these things must be considered, of course these dilemmas are felt by everyone at holiday season including the shopper, so if you're preparing a website, with a Black Friday special, always remember you're dealing with people, and treat them as

Q&A: Eclipse vs. occultation?

by Ibrahim Asad's PHotography
Question by 247FMC: Eclipse vs. occultation?
If we would have been defining the words eclipse and occultation a few million years ago, when the moon was a little closer to us, and therefore able to make more total solar eclipses and fewer annular ones, would we have called solar eclipses occultations instead?

(semantics, i know)
p.s. yahoo suggested i post this question in the automotives section. would i get better ansewrs from car nuts?

Best answer:
Answer by bikenbeer2000I guess you're right. A large moon covering a small sun might be considered more like a 'proper' occultation. Maybe when the moon has moved far enough away, an annular eclipse will be termed a transit.
Re: Automotives section. I've heard of a Mitsubishi Eclipse, but not a Mitsubishi Occultation.

In 1475 Paolia Toscanelli placed a bronze ring in a window of the Cathedral of Florence. The sun shines through the hole and, at noon, the image is divided, and shines on the cathedral floor. This was used for telling time and remains to this day. The pinhole camera dates back to the 11Th century There was certainly no need for camera bags back then, since the camera was room sized and had space for one or more people inside. The first published picture of a pinhole camera is a 1544 drawing of the solar eclipse by astronomer, Gemma Frisius. The first published pinhole photographs were by a Scottish scientist, Sir David Brewster in the 1850's. Pinhole cameras are still used to this day, though most are home made and on a much smaller scale, such as the ones we use to safely observe a solar eclipse.Modern day photography dates back to the early 1800's. The word photography is derived from the Greeks; photos meaning light and graphein meaning to draw. The word was first used in 1839 by scientist Sir John FW Herschel to describe a method of recording images. That was 12 years after the first photograph was captured by Frenchman Louis Jacque Mande Daguerre, a professional opera scene painter. This first process took eight hours and he then worked 12 more years to reduce the expose time to under 30 minutes and keep the image from disappearing. These first photographs were exposed on metal that had been sensitized to accept the image and were called Daguerreotypes after their French inventor. Then came the tintype, invented in 1856 by Hamilton Smith. This was a thin sheet of iron used as a base for light sensitive material to produce a photograph.Along came an American from upstate New York, George Eastman, who was very fascinated by photography, but frustrated with what he considered cumbersome exposure methods. He developed a dry photographic plate, patented it in the United States and England and began his first photographic business in 1880. In 1884, he replaced the glass plates with paper rolls allowing multiple images to be taken much more quickly. Four years later, on September 4, 1888 he patented he "roll film camera". You could take your pictures, mail the camera to Kodak who would develop your 100 photos and send them back to you along with another roll of 100 exposures. Sound familiar? The big difference? You used to get your camera back, now you don't!These pioneers would be amazed with the equipment available to us today. We have the digital camera, the SLR,35mm, the camcorder, automatic exposure and automatic focusing, zoom lens and video. We even take pictures with our cellphones, which we can then download onto our computers. We have the luxury of going just about anywhere to get that perfect shot. Indoors, outdoors,

A spectacular total eclipse which may last over 6 minutes and 30 seconds, the longest in the brief history of the 21st Century.
