The exceptionally talented Jazz artist Billy Cobham has released him CD entitled Total Eclipse. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Billy Cobham fans, and Jazz fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Total Eclipse Billy Cobham's artistic excellence is on full display as Cobham has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be him best work to date.It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that's exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn't a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you've got one of Billy Cobham's most impressive releases ever.I'm of the opinion that Total Eclipse is certainly Billy Cobham's best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it's a collection that even the casual Jazz fan can appreciate and enjoy.While the entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 3 - Total Eclipse, track 6 - The Moon Ain't Made Of Green Cheese, and track 8 - Last Frontier.My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Solarization: Solarization / Second Phase / Crescent Sun / Voyage / Solarization-Recapitulation. In the Middle Ages, people understood that the world is round and that the moon orbits the earth and gets between us and the sun, and vice versa.
In fact, the true cause of solar eclipses, the moon, was already well understood in both the west and China long before the time of Jesus. Thales of Miletus accurately predicted the eclipse of May 28, 585 BC.
Stories of dragons eating the sun and primitive tribesmen falling under the spell of some great white explorer who threatens to extinguish the sun are mostly fictional. For more than 2,500 years educated people have understood the cause of eclipses and knew how to predict them.

The year's very first total eclipse of the moon which lasted for an extraordinarily long time was probably thought to be the most stunning and exceptional total lunar eclipse in 11 years. It occurred last Wednesday (June 15, 2011) that made the moon into a dusky blood red and eventually left the sky watchers stunned. Based on the reports, observer's who patiently waited throughout Europe missed the earlier stage of the eclipse simply because it occurred before moonrise. Nonetheless the totality was observed all over the continent around 2100 BST (2000 GMT) except for Northern Scotland and Northern Scandinavia. In America, the totality was observable from eastern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. But sadly, none of the eclipse was seen from North America. And as for eastern Asia, eastern Australia and New Zealand, they have missed the final stages of the eclipse since it took place right after moonset. The good thing was, Google have teamed up with Slooh to show the eclipse 100 % free from 3 observatories for those people who were not able to look at the lunar eclipse simply because of their position or bad climate.Wel know that a full moon normally glows from the sunlight's reflection. On the other hand, a total lunar eclipse happens whenever the moon glides through the long shadow cast by the Earth and is most likely obstructed from the sunlight that helps illuminates it. As the moon falls further into the Earth's shadow, the disk in most cases appears to gradually change color, turning from silver to orange or red. This is mainly due to the fact some indirect sunlight still reaches the moon soon after passing through the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters blue light. Only red light strikes the moon, which gives it an eerie crimson hue. Well, as opposed to solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to observe with the naked eye.The entire lunar eclipse started at 1:24 p.m. EDT (1724 GMT) and lasted until 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT). The peak of the eclipse appeared around 4:12 p.m. EDT (2012 GMT). The period when the Earth's shadow completely blocks the moon or when the lunar face is entirely covered (known to us as totality) lasted from 1922 GMT until 2102 GMT or a whooping 1 hour and 40 minutes which made this phenomenon the longest total lunar eclipse. The previous time the moon was covered this long occurred on July 2000, where it lasted for about 7 minutes.

Astronomers are excited with what has just happened while we are moving from a strange impact on the planet Jupiter to a coming solar aclipse. Everything happened within only a few hours of one another.
An amateur astronomer in Australia noticed the new mark on the JUPITER Sunday and tipped off scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, who then confirmed it was the result of a new impact, NASA said. It's not clear what the object was that crashed into Jupiter's poisonous atmosphere.
Glenn Orton, a JPL scientist, told the magazine New Scientist that it could have been a block of ice from somewhere in Jupiter's neighborhood, or a wandering comet that was too faint for astronomers to have detected before impact. "We were extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour, the right side of Jupiter to witness the event. We couldn't have planned it better," Orton said in a NASA interview.
Let's keep those impacts on other planets: none here please!
Thermal images taken by NASA also showed a bright spot where the impact took place, which meant the crash warmed the lower atmosphere in that area, New Scientist said. Researchers also found hints of higher-than-normal amounts of ammonia in the upper atmosphere. The Shoemaker-Levy comet also churned up extra ammonia, the magazine said.

Skywatchers are gathering from parking lots in western India to music festivals on remote Japanese islands to witness what NASA describes as an "exceptionally long" total solar eclipse that will cross half the planet on Wednesday. "This eclipse has the potential to be observed by more people than any eclipse in all of history," said MIT astronomer Richard Binzel, who will be in Shanghai leading an expedition of observers and a group of eclipse chasers. "Essentially, every inhabitant of all of India and China will be able to see at least part of the sun covered throughout the day," he said.
The path of the total eclipse will stretch across the heart of Asia -- from India's Bay of Cambay, over the Himalayas and across China and the southern islands of Japan. Though the instance of greatest eclipse will occur over the Pacific Ocean at six minutes, 39 seconds, people in some areas of China and Japan will experience up to more than six minutes of darkness, according to predictions by Fred Espenak of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and J. Anderson of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

Binoculars and telescopes pointed at the sun and viewed by the human eye can cause instantaneous blindness. Professionals who use optical devices that have special filters which allow them to view the event through their instruments.Joe Citizen, on the other hand, has a few cheap options that can be just as fun. I'm going to briefly describe the most popular methods. Solar eclipse glasses purchased from an astronomy store, a homemade pinhole viewing box or the cardboard projection method.Safe solar eclipse glasses are made from a scratch resistant, optical density 5, black polymer material. They can remove practically all of the infra red, ultra violet and 99% of the harmful visible light spectrums. These special glasses allow you to see the eclipse as an orange image. They are cheap, lightweight, and some manufacturers offer the ability to print advertising information if your organization would like to give them away or sell them as promotional items. Even though these glasses are safely rated, experts still advice not to view the sun through them for extended lengths of time. So, use common sense and watch the eclipse for only short lengths of time.If you can't find a set of glasses, then your best bet is to make a pinhole viewer. A pinhole viewer is an indirect method of viewing the eclipse. It's much safer than any type of glasses or filter because in order to use it, your back is to the sun. (It's hard to burn your optic nerve that way) To make a pinhole viewer, simply take a medium sized, rectangular box and poke a small hole in the center of one of the short sides. While standing with your back to the sun, put the box over your head with the pinhole side facing the sun. You will see an inverted image of the eclipse projected on to the opposite side of the box. (CAUTION: Do NOT look through the pinhole under any circumstances. It can cause immediate blindness)Another safe method is to use two pieces of cardboard in the same way that the box was used above. Simply take one piece of cardboard and poke a hole in it. Hold the piece with the hole up to the sun and allow the light from the pinhole to project an image of the eclipse on to the other piece of cardboard. Again, DO NOT look through the pinhole at the sun for ANY reason. Unprotected direct viewing of the solar eclipse can cause permanent blindness.The first solar eclipse of 2010 was be on Jan 15, 2010. It was best viewed from the Maldives and is said to be the longest eclipse of the millennium. The next eclipse of 2010 will be a total solar eclipse on July 11.
