Millions of devotees flocked to Indias holy city of Varanasi to watch the eclipse and take a holy dip in the river. Unfortunately, a woman was killed and four injured in the mad rush to get there. Thousands of devotees gathered at the banks of river Ganga to watch the solar eclipse on Wednesday (July 22). The stampede of people killed a woman and injured four others. [Jagdeesh, Local]: "The accident took place at 8:30 am when people started running helter-skelter. Eight to ten people got trampled, two died and four were injured." The police believed that the woman died from suffocation and not from being trampled on. [PC Meena, Deputy Inspector General, Varanasi]: "Due to suffocation, one woman named Ganga Devi died. Four to five others are injured and there is nothing else." The eclipse began at 5:28 am local time in India and peaked for 6 minutes, 39 seconds. A solar eclipse is spiritually sacred for many Indians. Devotees from across the country take baths in rivers, a holy act believed to bring good fortune and release from the cycle of life and death. But others believe that an eclipse brings bad luck and expectant mothers may have complicated pregnancies or have miserable children. According to the US space agency NASA, the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century was visible in a roughly 250 km-wide (155 miles) corridor, as it traveled half the globe and passed through India and China.
