Solar eclipse is a spectacular celestial phenomenon and it occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the former is partially or fully covered. Although it's a natural event strongly supported with scientific explanations, people all over the world cutting across all religious lines blindly practice rituals which can be simply termed as superstitions. In fact, solar eclipse is an event to remember, a life time experience that helps us to imagine beyond our planet.There are 'n' number of superstitions surrounding the celestial event and in order to ward-off the associated fears and myths we need to understand one thing, why such a hype? The answer is simple - solar eclipse is not a new event and is occurring since the time immemorial. If we go back in the history, say about just 500 years, we see that science was not so much advanced and people were quite irrational. Even for small things they used to refer holy books, consult so called wise-men and then make a decision. For them, solar eclipse was something beyond explanation and therefore they have to believe in the superstitions like, victory of dark over light i.e. bad over good.But this kind of thinking in today's world is not at all acceptable. Though solar eclipse can be harmful if proper care is not taken to view it, it is has no ill-effects as has been described by people believing in illogical things. If the person does not take care while viewing the solar eclipse, he may end up losing his eye sight with permanently damaged retina. So, here's the list of do's and don'ts:1. Never view a solar eclipse with your naked eyes while it is in progress. Always use proper solar filters. Although, a total solar eclipse can be viewed without any safety gear, it is just for few minutes and as the sun starts to reappear, the eyes become vulnerable.2. Never use even the best available sunglasses to witness the event as they are not capable of protecting the eyes from the intense glare of sun.3. Don't use a low quality, thin or spurious filter or film as they stand no chance to prevent the sun-rays from damaging your eyes.4. Binoculars or telescopes can be used but make sure they have the solar filters fitted in.Now few things about the superstitions and myths:1. Some people believe that food should not be cooked and eaten during this period. Don't follow this illogical advice and do eat your meals at proper time. Few people assert that due to absence of sunlight, germs get accumulated on food and that's why it is not healthy. The Kanto Region (Tokyo) was expecting cloudy skies during the viewing time of the annular solar eclipse, but miraculously the skies cleared up for an awesome view of this natural phenomenon. Starting at about 6:50am the moon began to cross over the sun; coming to peak at about 7:32am, lasting for about 5 gracious minutes, till about 7:37am; then the moon made its pass which ended at about 9:02am. Absolutely AMAZING!!! The last view of this type of eclipse in the Kanto Region was 130 years ago, and the next one in the will be 300 years later...so this was a total blessing. Enjoy the pictures and video from Saitama (above Tokyo), Japan. Japan: 1987 was the last annular eclipse seen from Okinawa. And the next one will be in Hokkaido in 18 years.

Does anyone have a list of all solar eclipses for 2012?

About a year or so I checked the list of solar eclipses for 2011, 2012 and 2013. To my surprise 2012 was supposed to have at least three or may be even four of them (that doesn't include the partial ones - only the total, annular and hybrid ones). There would be even more, if the partial eclipses would be counted. Besides other websites I remember seeing it on Wikipedia. And now I find it really strange that all the search results I get from google (including Wikipedia) show only 2 solar eclipses for 2012. What happened to the rest? Did the vanish? Or just get canceled according to a unanimous agreement of all scientists? Or is it possible that the sources all agreed to show just the two main eclipses and delete information about the others? I am puzzled. Help.
No, I am sure I saw only solar ones, I don't know too much about astronomy, but that much I know.
The part about "unanimous agreement" of all scientists was just a sarcasm, I am in academia myself and certainly don't believe in conspiracy theory.
I do also know that it is not unusual to have two or more eclipses and that very it is possible (though very rarely) to have up to 5 solar eclipses a year. The only reason I see for such a confusion is that the source I was looking at had incorrect info, or I was reading the table (for solar eclipses only) incorrectly.

For the first time in almost four centuries (since 1683), December\'s full moon coincides with the winter solstice on December 12, 2010. The coincidence happens only when the Earth aligns itself directly between the sun and the moon. The Earth, on this moment, blocks the Sun’s rays from reaching the Moon, casting a shadow all over the Moon, turning the Moon into different colors: gray, pink, orange hue and even red. The 2010’s lunar eclipse is entirely visible in Greenland, North America and Iceland. The beginning stages before moonset can be perfectly watched in Western Europe while latest stage is seen fully in Australia. For those luckily have clear view of the sky, they describe the transformation of the Moon as a “coppery orb”.

The full moon shadowed by the Earth during a total lunar eclipse on the arrival of the winter solstice is seen over the Washington Monument.

The pictures show the sequence of the Moon in total lunar eclipse from Silver Spring, Maryland, America. The Moon is seen in red part of the spectrum and visible despite being in shadow.
