Understanding Solar Eclipses

Understanding Solar Eclipses

Solar eclipses are one of the true wonders of nature. From the innocuous viewing of partial eclipses to the lifetime event of experiencing a total eclipse it is interesting to gain an understanding of the facts behind these sometimes mysterious events.A basic explanation of what a solar eclipse is that it happens when the moon comes directly between the sun and the earth in either a partial or total fashion. Solar eclipses can only occur during new moons. This is the time of the month when the illuminated surface of the moon lies on the opposite side of the earth. It would seem that this implies a solar eclipse would occur once a month but in actuality the moon's orbit around the earth is slightly elliptical and tilts varying over an angle of five degrees relative to the earth. The moon only blocks the sun roughly twice a year when the new moon coincides with the tilt of the moon's orbit lying directly between the earth and the sun. The shadow of the moon is not large enough to cover the total surface of our planet so only a portion of the earth experiences an eclipse at a time. The difference between the more common partial eclipse and the more dramatic total eclipse is simply that in a total eclipse the moon is directly lined up so that it blocks out the sun in its entirety for a short period of time. Also, because the moon varies in distance from the earth during its orbit with time, it looks larger to the earth during some eclipses and smaller at others. When the moon is close to the earth during a total eclipse a total blockage of the sun's surface will occur. When the moon is further away it appears smaller and a slight ring of the sun around the moon's surface is visible. The result is an annular eclipse.A total eclipse is regarded as one of the true wonders of nature. Near its climax the world is cast into a different kind of darkness with an eerie orange and yellow twilight effect. Just as the sun passes under the cover of the moon the last sliver of the sun breaks into points of light known as Bailey's Beads. Bailey's Beads are the last remnants of light passing through the lunar valleys of the moon. Soon the last brilliant bead remains resembling a diamond ring. Finally totality is reached. At this point the actual gases emitted from the sun are visible around the perimeter of the moon at a luminosity equivalent to that of a full moon. The sun is perfectly safe to look at during this time in the form of a black disk in the sky. The magnitude of a total eclipse's beauty can not be over exaggerated. The eclipse then reverses with the

Is it bad to take photos of the solar eclipse or transit of venus with a D-SLR directly pointed at the sun?

by cknara
Question by : Is it bad to take photos of the solar eclipse or transit of venus with a D-SLR directly pointed at the sun?
I have not done it yet. There is a Transit of Venus next month which I am very anxious to take photos of. However, would it harm my camera?

Can someone also provide tips for how to take such pictures?

Answer by jlb777Taking a photo of a solar eclipse takes specialized filters to protect the camera sensor and your eyes. Here's a link that gives better details and info than I have. It goes without saying, never ever look through a camera lens or with your naked eyes directly at an eclipse unless you have the proper protection and know exactly what you are doing.

Total Solar EclipseOn July. 22th. 2009, a total solar eclipse brushed the Asian part of the earth, which is the longest eclipse since July 11, 1991. This eclipse could be captured only in Asia. It came to its peak in India at about 6:20am local time (8:50pm EDT; 0050 GMT), and lasted for 6 minutes and 39 seconds. Including me, most people in North America felt greatly regretful because the total eclipse cannot be seen in the continental Americas. However, the partial eclipse brushed Hawaii around sunset on July 21. The eclipse appeared on July 22 in Asia, but July 21 in Hawaii. But never lose heart, Americans! On July, 11,2010, there is a total solar eclipse up to magnitude of 1.058 hit ss America. Another total solar eclipse up to Magitude 1.031 is expected to occur in N. America, ns. America.A solar eclipse arises from the natural phenomenon when the moon moves between the Sun and the Earth, blocking competely or partially the sun light that transmits to the earth, and cast a shadow on earth. According to astronomers, at least two to five solar eclipses occur on Earth every year, one to two of them being total eclipses. In the acient times, with the comparatively less advanced technology, people were fear of solar eclipse when it occurred. They thought the sun was eaten by some dogz, which dropped a hint that a destructive disaster was on its way to come. There were many civil legends about solar eclipse. In the modern times, though science has already uncovered the mysterious veil of solar eclipse, there are still numbers of people who hold superstitious prejudice against solar eclipse. For example, during the elclipse on July, 22, 2009, millions of Indians kept themselves indoors in order to hide from the eclipse. India is an ancient country with too much spiritual stories and fables based on Hindu mythology. Some people think that an eclipse is caused by some beast when swallowing the sun, while another myth is that sun rays during an eclipse can harm unborn children, which makes their children handicap throughout their lives. So, in some areas where are abundant in superstition, even the eclipse is not visible, pregnant women were told to stay indoors and hide themselves in closed shelter. The solar eclipse on the 22th is depicted as the rare event that is seldom available throughout thousands of years due to its long lasting time- up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds. How did the Asian people keep this cherish moment? Numbers of astrophiles gathered a group, wearing unified T shirts and silicone wristbands, on top of which caving " 21th century, total Solar Eclipse". Dogh Maclain, vice president of association of astronomy said: " It was exciting moment though it last for few minutes. So, we
