From Earth, an annular solar eclipse appears as a solar ring. How high would you have to go up for it to appear as a total eclipse? In other words, how high is the point that that connects the umbra to the antumbra? Let's use the eclipse of May 10, 1994 as an example.

Answer by bikenbeer2000Since the Sun and Moon both appear about 0.5ยบ in diameter in the sky, this is the angle of taper of the Moon's shadow, i.e. about 1/100th of a radian. So for a shadow path width of 100 km on the surface of the Earth, the apex of the cone of the shadow will be about 10,000km above the Earth's surface.

Multiply all the widths by 100 to obtain an approximate answer.

How to Take Photos of the Solar Eclipse?
Taking photos of a solar eclipse could be very harmful to your eyes and also the equipment you use. Here are a set of instructions that you should strictly follow to safely take photos of a solar eclipse:1) Setup your equipment early. If you have a tripod, this is the time to bring it out as it will save you from looking directly into the sun and also let you take long exposure shots.2) Get a good solar filter that can be attached in front of your lens. Do not shoot without a filter as it can seriously damage your eyes or the camera sensor.3) If you have a DSLR or a camera with interchangeable lenses, put on the lens with the longest focal length. A focal length of 200mm to 5oomm should give you a really good picture that captures the intricate details of the sun. If you are using a compact camera, set it to the maximum optical zoom level that is available.4) Use an ISO value of 50 or 100, aperture size of 8-16 and focus on infinity. Take a series of photos at every shutter speed ranging from 1/1000 sec to 1 sec.5) If your camera supports bracketing, turn it on. This will tell the camera to automatically take the same shot at 3-5 different exposure levels and you can choose the best of the lot offline. If you don't have bracketing, manually change the exposure level for your shots so that you don't miss out on the magic. The low exposure shots will give you the details, the high exposure shots will give you better outer coronal features and you can also combine them later to create an HDR image.6) Take a few long exposure shots to further capture the coronal features better.7) To take group photos during the eclipse, project the image of the eclipse on a wall or in water using a reflector and shoot against the backdrop.

I'm writing a novel, and my main character is contemplating eclipses. The story is set in 1863 Kyoto, Japan. I was wondering if anyone has any idea where a chart may be that gives solar and lunar eclipse dates in this region for the 1800s. I know it's a weird, specific question, but I want to know if my character has possibly seen either of these events, or if he needs to be speaking from someone else's description of the event. Thanks!

I thought I had exhausted any interesting channelings about this year when I ran across a Facebook ad for a book talking about 2012. I had to click. What I found was "The 2nd Big Shift", by channel, healer, author and artist Jolie DeMarco. This work is both a collection of channelings from her guides about the energy of 2012 and guidance using her channeled art in the form of her Healing Mandalas Oracle Card Deck. The book has full color pictures of her cards along with descriptions. Jolie is the owner of My Flora Aura Mindful Healing Center in Boca Raton, Florida.In my book, "2012 Messages" it's quite clear from the sources that this year is the continuation and building of energy that has been going on for a while, not the end of this upward cycle of intense energetics. As one of Sherri Cortland's guides says, we are "waist-deep" into it. However, Jolie's guides have a slightly different take on this. They say that last year (2011) was the first big shift and that this year is "The 2nd Big Shift".Her guides state that "There are many small occurrences within a shift. There is one big shift before the Earth will move on to the next shift. The second big shift is 2012, then 2021,then 2025." She says that "The second big shift [this year] will work its way around the globe..." and "...culminate in a big event" but that there will be "really big changes in the world in 2021".The guides say that things are changing "atmospherically" and that this is affecting the air so that we can get acclimated more quickly to the new vibrations, "to get human bodies ready for the next part of the shift...". where "Earth will be reborn again."Jolie sees this current economic problem as just the start of getting people to change the way they exchange energy, to shift the values and realize that we are all connected. As she says, "we are all souls that live together". I believe that, but fear and worry keep us separated. That's what keeps the economy in a negative state. When people focus on how bad things are or how bad they could get in the future, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. We need to roll with it and adapt. In essence, we have to learn to be happy in all situations that we get placed in.
