What do you think? Answer below!

July 11, 1991 Total Solar Eclipse observed from Mexico (Novillero, La Paz, Mazatlan). Jupiter and Venus were seen during totality and were thought by some to be UFOs. The length of this eclipse was 6 minutes and 53 seconds. The next eclipse this long will be in 2132. There are solar and lunar eclipses every year, somewhere in the world. China and India will experience a long eclipse on July 22, 2009. The next total eclipse for the United States will be in 2017.

The Moon is the Earth's natural satellite. It orbits the Earth on a regular basis, much the same as the Earth orbits the Sun. The orbit of the Moon around the Earth creates several interesting conditions and in fact can greatly influence the Earth and everyone on it.The Moon orbits the Earth with a synchronous rotation. This means that nearly the same face of the Moon is faced towards the Earth at all times. In fact, only 59% of the face of the Moon can ever be observed from Earth. As the moon rotates, it also completes its orbit. The Moon completes one orbit of the Earth in 27.3 days, but because during this time, the Earth is also moving, a full lunar cycle is 29.5 days. These lunar cycles are responsible for the phases of the moon. The lunar cycle begins with the new moon. The new moon is when the moon first appears as a small sliver. Some cultures and even some calendars will use this new moon as the basis for the beginning of a new month.Over the course of the next 14 or so days, the lighted face of the moon will continue to become larger and larger. During this process, the moon cycle is called waxing gibbous. After 1 week, it will resemble a half moon and after the approximately 14 days, it will resemble a full Moon. Over the course of the next 14 or so days, the lighted face of the moon will decrease. This is the waning gibbous cycle. At the end of 7 days, it will be half a moon and by the end of 14 days, the lighted area will disappear and the cycle will begin again. This cycle brings up the first of the orbital effects of the moon on society and culture. The 29.5 day moon cycle corresponds to 1 month. The 12 cycles per year corresponds to the 12 months of the year. The approximately 7 days from each half of the moon corresponds to 1 week. Further more, this cycle of the Moon also corresponds to the menstrual cycle of many women. The moon's synchronous rotation as it orbits the Earth also causes the tides. As the moon orbits the Earth, the gravitational pull of the Moon is causing water to bulge towards it, causes a tide. This similar force will exist on the far side of the Earth as well, hence there are two tide cycles every day.The Moon's orbit causes eclipses to occur as well. There are two kinds of eclipses, the solar eclipse and the lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is between the sun and the moon. The lunar eclipse is unique in that we are able to view the shadow of the Earth being cast on the

Solar Eclipse today, who's going to watch it?

by fishgirl7
Question by : Solar Eclipse today, who's going to watch it?
Sadly only the people on Easter Island gets to see it in person, but thank God for whoever invented the internet and video feeds. Now those of us who arn't so fortunate to live in the middle of nowhere can see it in the comfort of our own homes, also without going blind from staring at it first hand.

So, who's going to watch it online?

How high up is the umbra of an annular solar eclipse?

Question by : How high up is the umbra of an annular solar eclipse?
From Earth, an annular solar eclipse appears as a solar ring. How high would you have to go up for it to appear as a total eclipse? In other words, how high is the point that that connects the umbra to the antumbra? Let's use the eclipse of May 10, 1994 as an example.

Best answer:
Answer by bikenbeer2000Since the Sun and Moon both appear about 0.5ยบ in diameter in the sky, this is the angle of taper of the Moon's shadow, i.e. about 1/100th of a radian. So for a shadow path width of 100 km on the surface of the Earth, the apex of the cone of the shadow will be about 10,000km above the Earth's surface.
For the 10th May 1994 eclipse, a list of the widths of the annular path is provided here: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEpath/SEpath1951/SE1994May10Apath.html
Multiply all the widths by 100 to obtain an approximate answer.

When Is The Next Full Moon, And Will It Be Blue?

by Stargazer95050
When Is The Next Full Moon, And Will It Be Blue?

We earthlings love to look up at the moon. So much does the moon enamor us; we write movies, songs and poems by the droves that contain the name of the earth's super satellite. A case in point is the fact that one of the biggest selling record albums of all time is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon."For all its romance inspiring awesomeness, the moon has another side to its personality. Werewolves, mood swings and even wild behavior are often blamed on the full moon. How many times have you heard the question acrimoniously asked, "is it a full moon tonight?"Still, the moon is important and interesting to all of us who live in sight of its majestic beauty. We never tire wondering about it. In this article, we will talk about the moon, its cycles and the phenomenon known as the "blue moon." Then, we will even give you a heads up as to when you can expect the next several full moons.Full moons on different daysWhere you live on earth rarely makes a difference as to whether the moon is full, quarter or new. This is because it takes the moon almost a month to travel around the earth and it only takes a day for the earth to turn around once. So in comparison, the moon sort of sits in the sky and waits for us to see what phase it is in. Still, there are times when the moon will be full on different calendar days in different areas of the earth.Once in a blue moonTechnically, it takes the moon an average of 29.53 days to travel around the earth. Most months are longer than this. So, it is possible to have more than one full moon in one month. When this happens, the second moon is called a "calendar blue moon." Of course, this is a simple rule. So, let's complicate it!The Farmer's Almanac defines a blue moon as the third full moon in a season of four full moons. This is the correct definition of a blue moon. Since a season is three months long, most seasons will have three full moons. However, on occasion a season will have four. When this happens, the third is a true blue moon.So here you have two definitions of a blue moon but the one for a calendar blue moon does not describe the true meaning of a blue moon. Here's why:On occasion February will have no full moons and January and March will both have two. In this case, you have two calendar blue moons in the same year. However, there can be no more than one in a year's time or it would not be that rare of an event. Using the Farmer's Almanac description there can be a maximum of one in a year. The moon's orbitThe moon's orbit is not on the same plane as the earth's orbit around

WoW! Significance of Sag Solar eclipse on US Thanksgiving, just as Merc turns retrograde?

Question by แธฏา‘แธฏแนงโ„Œ แบ˜า‘☤แนง⊥ แบ˜@☂แธ‰♄: WoW! Significance of Sag Solar eclipse on US Thanksgiving, just as Merc turns retrograde?
Eclipsese are extra energy boosts, and on Nov 24/25, we'll have a Solar eclipse in Sag, just a few hours after Merc goes retrograde in the same sign. Since this retrograde will almost double Mercury's time in Sag, what might be the implication and/or influence of this eclipse?

Anyone want to take a shot at it?
That was a good "shot", Michelle.

I was looking at more of the mundane features of this eclipse...it's rather unusual, the timing of the retrograde, I thought.

Thanks for sharing with us. It's always nice to see you.
Mercury turns at I think 20 degrees Sag, so that's in my 9th house....personally, I'm not seeing a huge affect from this eclipse...

Best answer:
Answer by MichelleI tend to look at the eclipses in the course of their coming up for various nations as well as for my clients. So I flipped through the pages of two ephemerides I have and saw several times when Mercury was already retrograde or had just turned direct. The last *similar* kind of emphasis was on December 4, 2002 when Jupiter went Retrograde 3.5 hours after the eclipse, but Jupiter was in trine to the Solar Eclipse.

It doesn't really matter whether you're looking at a Solar or Lunar Eclipse in relation to mundane transits as they are *unless you are considering the natal chart of an individual, a company or building, or a city, state or nation,* and even then, you must take close notice to all of the transiting dynamics of the moment of the eclipse as it relates to that natal chart. It *must* make a contact to the natal chart by hard aspect. In other words, it isn't just the eclipse point, for example, as you pointed to the Solar Eclipse at 2 Sagittarius 37 on November 25 at 6:11 am GMT; it's any point that any of the planets have touched at that time. (Mercury goes direct, btw, nearly 24 hours before that, at 7:36:57 am GMT.) So if you have a natal planet, for instance, in the range of, say, 25 Sagittarius to 5 Capricorn, then Venus is going to make contact with your natal chart that day. *However,* even the Moon could touch that point sometime after the eclipse and you would feel the impact going back to the eclipse. Depending on what planet it is and how it touches your chart, it can be noticeable or make you wonder what the fuss was all about.

I'm not saying some won't feel the retrograde. If it starts during someone's Lunar Return, that person will have the Retrograde seem to take longer than it does through others' charts. If it starts shortly after your Lunar Return, on the other hand, it's possible you won't even notice it taking as long as the other Mercury retrogrades do. It tends to be relative.

Edit: I'm afraid this might disappoint you, but since the

A Frankenstein's Monster in the 2008 US Transition

by Lancer873
A Frankenstein's Monster in the 2008 US Transition

The Republican candidate in the 2008 US presidential election unleashed upon America a rightwing zealot who overshadowed him like a total solar eclipse. America voted against the Republican slate by a margin large enough to escape court challenges or Supreme Court rulings. But the beauty queen zealot he jettisoned as she rocketed to fame has continued to turn up like the proverbial bad penny since the ticket lost the election. The turkey pardon with slaughter as a background a week before Thanksgiving was caught by a local TV station and became an immediate mainstream sensation, as well as an instant YouTube hit. That media mishap came a week after the former vice-presidential candidate's resounding success at the demoralized Republican Governor's meeting in Miami within two weeks of the election.Touted as the new face of the Republican party, the current Alaskan governor downplayed the celebrity she had fueled with interviews on NBC, Fox News and CNN during the previous week, according to the New York Times. The answers to challenges in the areas of developing energy resources and health care reform were not for the government to step in and take over, she said in a week in which the government was doing just that with a $ 700 million bailout. "Heaven forbid!" she added as Minnesota's Governor Tim Pawlenty pointed out the Republican deficit in every region of the country and in every voting group, including among minorities, people with limited income and women.Even so, by the weekend following the unfortunate turkey shoot, the new Republican star was featured in an AOL News item on her "celebrity status still on the rise." Oprah wanted her, so did Jay Leno and Letterman. The William Morris Agency had been in touch. She could do an interview with any news agency on the planet, her spokesperson was quoted as saying. The flood of media offers was unconfirmed. The Anchorage Daily News, however, chided the governor for carrying on national activities while state issues needed the leader's attention, including in the areas of education and plummeting oil prices. The superstar who shot to fame because of the maverick Republican running for election in the 2008 campaign is not about to go away. She has stated an interest in running for presidency in 2012. The lure of the big time beyond Alaska is apparently compelling.Meanwhile, another matter closer to home than Alaskan state affairs remains in the balance. That was the stunning revelation of a faith-based conservative that her unmarried teenage daughter was pregnant.Preempted from scandal by presenting the development as a mistake with which any family could empathize, a marriage of the two teens was part of the announcement. That was no doubt mandatory, given that the religious right was being courted for a sure-fire win as had supposedly been engineered four years earlier by the current Republican administration.Just before the election, the wedding was announced as planned for spring after the expected birth of the

Q&A: can i view the moon eclipse today if i live in New Jersey?

Question by B.N.: can i view the moon eclipse today if i live in New Jersey?
Its in the US. but if i live in NJ is it possible to see it?
thank you,

Best answer:
Answer by david_bowman_scNo. Though the moon will be up for you before 9pm, the sky will be too bright with the twilight to notice any change in the Moon's brightness. It will be extremely difficult to see, even in a dark sky since this is not an umbral but a penumbral eclipse. The Moon misses the dark part of the Earth's shadow and only hits the fringe part of the shadow.

From Sky and Telescope's web site:

# Wednesday, August 5

# Full Moon (exact at 8:55 p.m. EDT), with Jupiter near it. The Moon undergoes a very slight penumbral eclipse, probably too slight for any shading to be detectable at all by eye. If you want to try, South America, Europe, or Africa are the places to be; the midtime is 0:39 August 6th UT.
