i read somewhere that people believe the world will end in 2012 because other things mentioned in the Mayan calendar have been said to have happened.
im just wondering, what exactly from the calendar has occurred?

On July 11, 1991, a total solar eclipse was visible from Hawaii and Mexico. Some of Ufology's best, yet controversial videos were taken by the citizens of Mexico. The objects in questions have been explained away by debunkers as the planet Venus or Jupiter, or other misidentified conventional flying craft. Prior to the total solar eclipse, you may be able to look at the shadow thrown by a tree onto the ground. Often thousands of small images of the sun in partial eclipse will be visible. How does this happen? Does this phenomena have any thing to do with the term,'Fraunhoffer Diffraction?

Answer by Roger KDon't know if it is related to Fraunhoffer Diffraction, but each opening between the leaves through which the sun shines acts like a pinhole camera to project the image of the eclipsed sun on the ground.

In other words, is the position of the moon during a total eclipse exactly on the same spot everytime? I have heard of an annular eclipse in which the moon appears smaller leaving a thick ring around the moon's shadow. I was thinking maybe there was variations in between the two that are visible to, maybe, a high precision instrument since every total eclipse to the naked eye is exactly the same.
Sorry i meant variation in position as in distance.

Answer by Foxyes and no it is in the same spot for viewing on how it would appear and in diffrent parts of the earthand its only once a year that theres a total solar eclipse but never the exact same spot in space

Answer by Big Ol' Gal Named HildyAccording to NASA's eclipse site, there's an ANNULAR eclipse due that will be visible very near Las Vegas in 2012 (the darkest portion will be slightly north, according to the map). As to a total eclipse, there's not another one due in Las Vegas at least through the end of the century. Check out the World Atlas of Solar Eclipse Maps on the page below.
The closest TOTAL eclipse to you any time soon will be in 2017 in Oregon; that's not exactly around the corner, but maybe you'll get to go see it :-) I live near Seattle, so maybe I'll be there too!
