NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the Moon slipping in front of the face of the Sun on March 4, 2011. This view is in the far ultraviolet and shows lots of solar activity like sunspots (which are bright in the UV) and prominences. The Moon appears to change direction because SDO is orbiting the Earth. This is difficult to explain using just words, so I have created a diagram on my blog. It's the same effect that makes planets seem to reverse direction over several days (called "retrograde motion") or race cars seem to move left-to-right on the near side of the racetrack and right-to-left on the far side. and the only place you can view these events in the western hemisphere is on a remote island off Chile. the History channel show says that Venus crossing the sun is rare. How rare is it? how often does it occur? it(venus) occurs 200 days before Dec 21, 2012.

Answer by Viola At NeonYes. None of this has anything to do with 21 December 2012, unless you're some sort of gullibility victim. Or just plain dumb.
Transits of Venus occur in pairs 8 years apart, with about a century between the pairs. The last pair were in 1874 and 1882. This pair are in 2004 and 2012. The next pair will be in 2117 and 2125. This has been known for centuries.

See my Previous Video-youtu.be This is a Crop Circle that appeared in August of 2005. It was analyzed by experts in Mayan symbols. It reveals to them that May 20th 2012, the day of the Solar Eclipse, will be the (DAY ZERO) and the DAY OF THE RETURN OF THERE MESSIAH (antichrist?). Another one later appeared in August of last year (2011) that was indicating to them that the same date (May 20th 2012) was the key day. It is the same day a alignment of stars will take place that many wait erroneously for December 21st 2012 to see. (Meaning May 20th 2012 is the real Dec 21st 2012 or so they say.I guess only time can tell & we will see.

Answer by roderick_youngTo get the solar day, you would time how long it takes for the sun to get back to (say) it's highest position in the sky.
To get the sidereal, you would pick a star, the bright Sirius might be a good choice, and make the same kind of time measurement.

There will be an annular eclipse of the sun visible throughout the Reno/Tahoe region on May 20th, 2012. According to Nevada Magazine the totality of the eclipse will last from 6:28 to 6:33 pm local time in the regions with the longest totality. Though a partial eclipse will be visible across the region, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Pyramid Lake (Where the Symbiosis music festival will be taking place May 17-21) are all directly in the path of the moon's shadow where all of the sun except for a small ring of light will be totally obscured.
