How would you show experimentally that the solar day is longer than the sidereal day?

Answer by roderick_youngTo get the solar day, you would time how long it takes for the sun to get back to (say) it's highest position in the sky.
To get the sidereal, you would pick a star, the bright Sirius might be a good choice, and make the same kind of time measurement.
