July 11, 1991 Total Solar Eclipse observed from Mexico (Novillero, La Paz, Mazatlan). Jupiter and Venus were seen during totality and were thought by some to be UFOs. The length of this eclipse was 6 minutes and 53 seconds. The next eclipse this long will be in 2132. There are solar and lunar eclipses every year, somewhere in the world. China and India will experience a long eclipse on July 22, 2009. The next total eclipse for the United States will be in 2017.

The Moon is the Earth's natural satellite. It orbits the Earth on a regular basis, much the same as the Earth orbits the Sun. The orbit of the Moon around the Earth creates several interesting conditions and in fact can greatly influence the Earth and everyone on it.The Moon orbits the Earth with a synchronous rotation. This means that nearly the same face of the Moon is faced towards the Earth at all times. In fact, only 59% of the face of the Moon can ever be observed from Earth. As the moon rotates, it also completes its orbit.The Moon completes one orbit of the Earth in 27.3 days, but because during this time, the Earth is also moving, a full lunar cycle is 29.5 days. These lunar cycles are responsible for the phases of the moon. The lunar cycle begins with the new moon. The new moon is when the moon first appears as a small sliver. Some cultures and even some calendars will use this new moon as the basis for the beginning of a new month.Over the course of the next 14 or so days, the lighted face of the moon will continue to become larger and larger. During this process, the moon cycle is called waxing gibbous. After 1 week, it will resemble a half moon and after the approximately 14 days, it will resemble a full Moon. Over the course of the next 14 or so days, the lighted face of the moon will decrease. This is the waning gibbous cycle. At the end of 7 days, it will be half a moon and by the end of 14 days, the lighted area will disappear and the cycle will begin again.This cycle brings up the first of the orbital effects of the moon on society and culture. The 29.5 day moon cycle corresponds to 1 month. The 12 cycles per year corresponds to the 12 months of the year. The approximately 7 days from each half of the moon corresponds to 1 week. Further more, this cycle of the Moon also corresponds to the menstrual cycle of many women.The moon's synchronous rotation as it orbits the Earth also causes the tides. As the moon orbits the Earth, the gravitational pull of the Moon is causing water to bulge towards it, causes a tide. Sadly only the people on Easter Island gets to see it in person, but thank God for whoever invented the internet and video feeds. Now those of us who arn't so fortunate to live in the middle of nowhere can see it in the comfort of our own homes, also without going blind from staring at it first hand.

From Earth, an annular solar eclipse appears as a solar ring. How high would you have to go up for it to appear as a total eclipse? In other words, how high is the point that that connects the umbra to the antumbra? Let's use the eclipse of May 10, 1994 as an example.

Answer by bikenbeer2000Since the Sun and Moon both appear about 0.5ยบ in diameter in the sky, this is the angle of taper of the Moon's shadow, i.e. about 1/100th of a radian. So for a shadow path width of 100 km on the surface of the Earth, the apex of the cone of the shadow will be about 10,000km above the Earth's surface.

Multiply all the widths by 100 to obtain an approximate answer.

Eclipsese are extra energy boosts, and on Nov 24/25, we'll have a Solar eclipse in Sag, just a few hours after Merc goes retrograde in the same sign. Since this retrograde will almost double Mercury's time in Sag, what might be the implication and/or influence of this eclipse?

Mercury turns at I think 20 degrees Sag, so that's in my 9th house....personally, I'm not seeing a huge affect from this eclipse...

Answer by MichelleI tend to look at the eclipses in the course of their coming up for various nations as well as for my clients. So I flipped through the pages of two ephemerides I have and saw several times when Mercury was already retrograde or had just turned direct. The last *similar* kind of emphasis was on December 4, 2002 when Jupiter went Retrograde 3.5 hours after the eclipse, but Jupiter was in trine to the Solar Eclipse.
It doesn't really matter whether you're looking at a Solar or Lunar Eclipse in relation to mundane transits as they are *unless you are considering the natal chart of an individual, a company or building, or a city, state or nation,* and even then, you must take close notice to all of the transiting dynamics of the moment of the eclipse as it relates to that natal chart. It *must* make a contact to the natal chart by hard aspect. In other words, it isn't just the eclipse point, for example, as you pointed to the Solar Eclipse at 2 Sagittarius 37 on November 25 at 6:11 am GMT; it's any point that any of the planets have touched at that time. (Mercury goes direct, btw, nearly 24 hours before that, at 7:36:57 am GMT.) So if you have a natal planet, for instance, in the range of, say, 25 Sagittarius to 5 Capricorn, then Venus is going to make contact with your natal chart that day. *However,* even the Moon could touch that point sometime after the eclipse and you would feel the impact going back to the eclipse. Depending on what planet it is and how it touches your chart, it can be noticeable or make you wonder what the fuss was all about.
I'm not saying some won't feel the retrograde. If it starts during someone's Lunar Return, that person will have the Retrograde seem to take longer than it does through others' charts. If it starts shortly after your Lunar Return, on the other hand, it's possible you won't even notice it taking as long as the other Mercury retrogrades do. It tends to be relative.

Answer by david_bowman_scNo. Though the moon will be up for you before 9pm, the sky will be too bright with the twilight to notice any change in the Moon's brightness. It will be extremely difficult to see, even in a dark sky since this is not an umbral but a penumbral eclipse. The Moon misses the dark part of the Earth's shadow and only hits the fringe part of the shadow.

can I take a photo of the solar eclipse without damaging my camera?

I don't have a solar filter. I know that I can't look directly at the sun but if I wait until the actual eclipse, can I at least attempt to photograph it? Or am I going to damage the camera? I wasn't able to get a welders mask or anything, all hardware stores sold out like two weeks ago.

Answer by jeannieWhere are you? If you're in the path of totality, you should not shoot it without a filter for both the camera and a filter for your eyes. You should never look directly at an eclipse. Blindness can result.
I'm in Los Angeles, where it will be partial at sunset. So, I"m wearing my solar glasses, but I'm not filtering the camera. As the fog is coming in, I think the whole thing will be moot anyway.

Some video footage I recorded of the Annular Solar Eclipse on May 21st, 2012. I live in eastern, Iowa, so the Eclipse was out of the line for the best viewing for a full annular, so it was a partial for us...still very cool though. I was located out in the country between Clinton & Andover, Iowa. For YouTube, I set the video to play at 4x speed. After the video are some photos I took. The Video and a few of the photos was recorded/taken with a Canon Vixia HFS100 camcorder. The majority of the photos were taken with a Canon Rebel XSi using a Sigma DG 70-300 lens.

I also got the sentiment from quite a few people that they would like a little more information about what these cosmic alignments are tuning the consciousness of the solar system to exactly. I will be brief but since this time is very powerful as a STEPPING STONE to the Spirit's influence on our understanding of self... it is quite important we use the time wisely.Basically we had a lunar eclipse real close to the June Solstice which made alignments with Venus and Pluto. Venus connects with the second Chakra, Pluto with endings and spiritual achievement and ALL eclipses connect subconscious with conscious creating a neutral place for information to just come or pass through... like a portal and in strong conditions become multidimensional as well. Normally the affects of an eclipse will last 1 month, starting 2 weeks before and ending two weeks after.As this Solar Eclipse on July 11 is almost exactly 2 weeks after the Lunar eclipse we just had we had quite a shifting pull on mixing our conscious daily lives with our subconscious dream lives and memory banks and also all the right elements to make this portal open to more dimensions.But there was even more to this cosmic event and it's relation to future cosmic events make it that much more important. During the Solar Eclipse on July 11th the solar system will be tuned to the frequency of the heart chakra and omit a super cosmic blast of love energy. BANGKOK – A swath starting in India and crossing Shanghai to southern Japan will be plunged into darkness for about five minutes Wednesday in the longest total solar eclipse that will happen this century.
Japan, which hasn't seen a total eclipse for 46 years, is celebrating with fireworks. An astrologer in Myanmar has warned the eclipse is a sign of impending chaos. In India, some pregnant women have been told to stay indoors to follow a centuries-old tradition of avoiding the sun's invisible rays.
The eclipse will appear first at dawn in India's Gulf of Khambhat just north of the metropolis of Mumbai.
It will move east across India, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China before hitting the Pacific. The eclipse will cross some southern Japanese islands and be last visible from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. Elsewhere, a partial eclipse will be visible in much of Asia.
For astronomers, it will be a chance for a prolonged view of the sun's corona, a white ring 600,000 miles (1 million kilometers) from the sun's surface. The previous total eclipse, in August 2008, was two minutes and 27 seconds. This one will last 6 minutes and 39 seconds at its maximum point.
Solar scientist Lucie Green is aboard an American cruise ship heading for that point near the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, where the axis of the moon's shadow will pass closest to earth.
Passengers paid $ 2,599 to $ 3,643 for the cruise run by Mayhugh Travel Inc., a California company that specializes in astronomy vacations, according to the company's Web site.
"The corona has a temperature of 2 million degrees but we don't know why it is so hot," said Green of University College London. "What we are going to look for are waves in the corona. ... The waves might be producing the energy that heats the corona. That would mean we understand another piece of the science of the sun."
Scientists are hoping data from the eclipse will help explain solar flares and other structures of the sun and why they erupt, said Alphonse C. Sterling, a NASA astrophysicist who will be following the eclipse in China.

Well Darlings,The hot weather stayed for another week, I see. Blackpool has sweltered in the heat, and a walk along the prom must have reminded many locals of: "the good old days" when they saw the crowded beaches with so many kids making sandcastles and people splashing about in the sea. Nevertheless, with global warming, and changing climates, such hot weather might soon become more common - and we might be grateful for that shade one day! Sweeties, that went out the window the instant those buttocks escaped the jeans! Which brings me to wonder when John Prescott's political correctness escaped him. The Standards and Privileges Committee have decided that Mr Prescott DID fail in his duty as an MP by not immediately declaring his stay at the ranch of United States billionaire, Philip Anschutz - a man bidding to open a super-casino at the London's Millennium Dome. The findings also said Prescott had effectively admitted breaking the Ministerial Code by accepting hospitality that "might reasonably have been thought likely" to influence his actions.Nonetheless for being found guilty, Downing Street (which has the sole responsibility for policing the rules) says it will not be taking any action, and it considers the matter closed. Mr Prescott says he has "fully accepted" the report's findings, yet immediately contradicts that by saying he still believes there is "no case to answer". And the Prime Minister's official spokesman tells us the problem has been resolved because the Deputy Prime Minister has now registered both the stay and the gifts! Yeah, like eleven months later, and then only after being caught out! The tropical sun was dominating when the invading moon came to block its surface without question.It happened as was predicted by scientists. It was almost near to perfection. Scientists indicated it would occur between the hours of 0830 and 093 UT.However,by 7.30 hours GMT some parts of the country,especially in the Western Region about 400km west of the capital city Accra, the lunar journey across the the solar pathway had actually started in Ghana.In the Ghanaian capital itself the magical movement was spotted around 7.45 am. That was the precise time this writer noticed the event for the first time with the solar eclipse goggles, purchased for that purpose.The much-anticipated eclipse of the sun and its resultant anxiety and eagerness was no longer a speculation. It happened on 29/03/06 in Ghana where it set off as its gateway to Africa.Scores of exited,enthusiastic and over-joyed citizens viewed the phenomenon across the country.At the time Ghanaians were enjoying the sight of the celestial romance between the sun and the moon with the planet earth acting as an eye witness,some selected other African countries were experiencing the memorable event as well.Those other nations included Benin, Nigeria, Niger and Togo,all in West Africa; Egypt and Libya in North Africa and Chad in Central Africa.The event attracted scientists and tourists from all parts of the world who trooped in to Ghana to witness once- in- a -century event.It was telecast live on the National Television for the world to behold.Records show that the last time a total solar eclipse occurred in Ghana was in 1947. There was no television at the time in the country. Thus, in the next 50 years or so time,when the miracle is expected to occur again, our children's children would be privileged and likily to view what we watched today thanks to Information Communication Technology (ICT).Interestingly, virtually all hotels in six out of ten Regions in the country where the total eclipse was experienced were booked in advance. The regions included the Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Volta and Western Regions.
