What total solar eclipse had/will have the greatest number of viewers?

Question by anonymous: What total solar eclipse had/will have the greatest number of viewers?
I would assume that it would be one whose narrow path crosses many major cities.
Also, which total solar eclipse was/will be witnessed by the greatest percentage of the Earth's population?
How about the greatest population within the umbra at the same time? The next Tokyo eclipse maybe?
Only a very narrow band can see totality.
It's all about the placement.
Thanks for the calsky site.
The New York eclipse was in 1925, there will be one in 2079.
At least for Americans 2017 is all that would matter.
