How long does it take for solar eclipses to reappear from the same place?
Question by Malachi: How long does it take for solar eclipses to reappear from the same place?
Best answer:
Answer by DLMSome locations have witnessed two partial eclipses in the same year. Other places can go several years without seeing a partial solar eclipse.
With total eclipses, there are actually some locations on the globe that will never get one in the next 1000 years, while others will have 9 or 10 in that same time period.

Q&A: What time would I need to be up to see the lunar eclipse this December?

So I found out that on December 21 2010, there will be a visible lunar eclipse. I really wanna stay up and see it but I don't know what time the eclipse will be visible from where I live in Southern California. Does anyone know?
Best answer:
Answer by Anne MarieHi Y!
The time you'll want to look for Monday night's eclipse is 10:33 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, the moment when the partial eclipse begins.
It takes just over an hour for the earth's shadow to completely engulf the moon, which means that totality arrives at 11:41 p.m. PST and then lasts for another hour and 12 minutes.
Why are others saying December 21st when in fact it's Monday night? The official way the dates of eclipses are reckoned follows Greenwich Mean Time, the time zone of England, and this eclipse indeed happens on Tuesday morning the 21st GMT, and indeed Tuesday evening in New Zealand. In North America, though, it's Monday night, although the eclipse will run past midnight over most of the continent.
You may see some writers giving earlier times for the official start of the eclipse. They're not wrong, technically, but these earlier times are not helpful, and you will not see any eclipse until 10:33 p.m. Pacific Time.
A penumbral eclipse starts at 9:28 p.m. Monday night. A penumbral eclipse means that an observer watching from the moon would see the beginning of a partial eclipse of the sun by the earth. During a partial eclipse of the sun, the amount of light reaching the moon is slightly reduced, much as happens here when we start a partial solar eclipse.
Watching from earth, though, you won't notice anything happening during the penumbral eclipse. If you went out looking at 9:28, you'd likely just grouse that you'd been given wrong information, and disappointedly go to bed. You'll see only a normal full moon if you were to go out looking before 10:33 p.m. PST.
(Actually, if you look carefully, you may be able to notice signs of the deepening penumbral phase in the last few minutes before the start of the partial eclipse at 10:33 p.m. PST. In those last few minutes, the lower left part of the moon is only receiving a fraction of its normal sunlight. It would look to you as though the left "cheek" of the man in the moon (facing from earth) were in need of a shave. It's nothing like the start of the partial eclipse, though.)
This eclipse is shallow, as total lunar eclipses go. That means that during totality, the moon will remain a coppery red. Some total eclipses are deeper, and the moon darkens to the point where you might not even notice it if you didn't know where to look. This eclipse is not one of these.
Total eclipses of the moon occur in runs, every six months or so, usually with three or four total

Q&A: What astrological phenomena were occurring when the Sun transitted during January and February 1962?
Question by cire: What astrological phenomena were occurring when the Sun transitted during January and February 1962?
I recall that people born during Aquarius in 1962 have extraordinary planetary influences. Note: The British singing sensation Susan Boyle mentioned the fact that she was 47, born in 1962 or perhaps 1963. Tellingly, she very well might be a member of this elite group. Anyone know Susan's birthday?
Best answer:
Answer by Cheshire KittyThere was a total solar eclipse in February of 1962.
"The amazing total solar eclipse of February 5, 1962 displays an enormous charge of planets in Aquarius (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, ALL 7 traditional planets), with Uranus, Aquarius ruler, conjunct with Regulus, the most powerful fixed star in heaven."(1)
That was the only major astrological event that I can think of but here (2) is a full ephemeris of the year for your reference.
As for Ms. Boyle, we'll have to wait a bit until they publish her birthdate and then we'll know if your theory is correct. I couldn't find her birthdate on any of the fansites.
Wouldn't it be awesome if you're right?

Astronomy questions regarding the moon phases, superior planets, and hypothetical situations!?
Question by flipit54: Astronomy questions regarding the moon phases, superior planets, and hypothetical situations!?
Any experts on Astronomy? I'm having a really tough time with my homework. My textbook is not helping me at all!
1) What time does the waxing gibbous moon rise? Your choices are noon, 3pm, sunset, 9pm
2) What time does the last quarter moon set? Your choices are sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight.
3) What phases of the superior planets can we see from earth?
4) In an alternate solar system, assume the moon goes around the Earth CLOCKWISE while the earth still goes around the sun counter-clockwise. Is the synodic month shorter than, equal to, or longer than the sidereal month in this setup?
5) Annular eclipses of the Sun occur when the angular size of the moon is smaller than the angular size of the Sun. When will it be easiest, considering the distances between Earth-Moon and Earth-Sun, an annular eclipse rather than a total eclipse to occur?
Any help would be appreciated, I've completed most of my packet but these problems are leaving me up after four hours of work!
Best answer:
Answer by StarryskyFirst quarter rises at noon (six hours or a quarter day after the sun)
Full moon rises when sun sets because it is on opposite side of Earth from sun.
Waxing (growing) gibbous moon is anywhere between first quarter and full phases.
Now you know the answer to #1
Last quarter moon is 6 hours (a quarter day) ahead of the sun, just as first quarter was a quarter day behind the sun. Now you know the answer to #2
When we look at superior planets, those with orbits larger than Earth's orbit, those are Mars and beyond. We can see them when opposite the sun (midnight). Then they are illuminated how much? Superior planets orbit the Sun, part way around then how illuminated? Or farther around? But since they are farther from the Sun than Earth, they can never be between Earth and Sun. They can be on other side of sun and appear in daylight sky (if the air was not so bright or there was a total solar eclipse or you were on the Space Station). Then how would they be illuminated? If you are unsure still, set out a bare light bulb and have another person walk around it. Now you know answer to #3.
I think you know how to set up demonstration for #4 to find the answer. Look up the definitions of the synodic and sidereal months and see how they work with revolution of the moon around the Earth and the revolution of the Earth around the Sun in combination. See how the moon appears against the fixed star background (the wallpaper) as your marble moon goes around the baseball Earth as it goes around the lightbulb Sun.
Number 5 is a bit harder since you must look up the terms annular and total eclipses. Then you can take a piece of

How to calculate moon sign without online websites?
Question by lauren: How to calculate moon sign without online websites?
Does anyone actually know how to calculate someones moon sign without using online sites etc. If so could you try explain it to me if it isn't too hard? Thanks ;)
Best answer:
Answer by MarkabIf you are only interested in the sign, not the degree, you might get lucky and just be able to look it up in an ephemeris. An ephemeris is a book that contains all the positions of the planets every day using the tropical zodiac and celestial longitude for reference. The Moon travels between roughly 12 and 15 degrees per day. It takes 2 1/2 days approximately to go through a sign. If it is in the same sign all day the day you were born, you just look it up. You have to know how to read all the glyphs or symbols though.
If the Moon changed signs during the day, you would have to know if you were born before or after the sign change. In other words if the Moon was in Gemini at midnight and went to Cancer at 11:00 AM on your birthday, you would have to know if you were born before or after 11:00 am to know if your Moon is in Gemini or Cancer.
However, an astrologer is interested in more than the sign, particularly with the Moon. He wants to know what degree of the sign and without a computer program to calculate it, it is a somewhat laborious job not suited to the math-phobic. You have to know the time of birth accurately. Then you have to look at the Moon's position for a period before and after that time. The ephemeris will give the Moon's position twice a day, once at noon Greenwich Mean Time and once at midnight. Let's say you were born at 7:00 AM GMT you would take the position of the Moon at midnight before birth and the position at noon after birth and with the use of a calculator and some tricky math figure out where the Moon was at 7:00 AM.
Your birth time would have to be converted to GMT first of course. This is easy. If you are American GMT is five hours sooner than EST, 6 hours sooner than central time, 7 hours sooner than Mountain Time and 8 hours sooner than Pacific time. When it is 8:00 AM in Chicago, central time, it is 2:00 PM GMT. Subtract one hour from the above during daylight savings time. Greenwich Time does not change during daylight time. Also note the date changes at midnight GMT. If you were born at 9:00 PM in New York on, say January 5, it is 2:00 AM GMT January 6. There are two different dates for the same instant.
If you are serious about astrology it is a good idea to learn how to calculate an entire chart "by hand," i.e. without a

Answer by B.Edit:
People, read her question---she wants to know when she can see it at her home. Unless she can travel to other parts of the earth, she will have to wait until 2017. Nice link Mark but it still is not in the USA. I guess that the thumbs down person cant read a question in its entirety.

This is a map of the next one that will completely eclipse over the USA in 2017. There will be others before but not over the USA. I will be in Stanely Idaho! See you there!
(From spaceweather.com)
On Aug. 21, 2017, there will be a total eclipse of the sun directly above the continental United States. Graphic artist Larry Koehn created this animated preview:
http://spaceweather.com/swpod2007/21aug07/koehn1.gif
The path of totality crosses hundreds of US towns and cities including Salem, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Nashville. Residents of those places can experience the cool sweep of the Moon's shadow and the ghostly, shimmering solar corona without even leaving their own back yard. But many people will travel--to Kentucky. A spot just northwest of Hopkinsville KY will be in the Moon's shadow longer than any other, a full 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Eclipse chasers--people who once were normal, but now race to the four corners of the Earth to catch their next eclipse--say that's enough time to change your life. Answer by aliPhotographing an eclipse of the Sun is fun and easy. However, you will need to use a special Solar Filter to protect your eyes and your camera.
A solar eclipse occurs whenever the Moon's shadow falls on the Earth. This can only happen during New Moon when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. Although there is a New Moon every 29 1/2 days, there are usually only 2 or 3 solar eclipses each year. That's because the Moon's orbit is tipped 5 degrees to Earth's so the Moon's shadow misses Earth during most New Moons. (see: Solar Eclipses For Beginners)
Watching and photographing an eclipse of the Sun is a relaxing activity since it progresses at a leisurely pace. The eclipse begins as a small notch slowly appears along one edge of the Sun. During the next hour, the Moon gradually covers more and more of the Sun's bright disk. If the eclipse is a total one, the last remaining minutes of the partial phases can be quite dramatic and beautiful. The crescent of the Sun grows thinner as the Moon's shadow approaches. The abrupt darkness of totallity is stunning and quite unlike you've ever seen. And the incredible solar corona is simply the most awe-inspiring naked-eye sight in all of nature. Certainly the most a remarkable sight (see: The Experience of Totality)....
