Can Staring at an Eclipse Really make you go Blind?
Question by Malevolence: Can Staring at an Eclipse Really make you go Blind?
Can it make you go blind or just hurt your eyes? Temporary blindness or permanent? And can video taping an Eclipse, looking at the eclipse through a camera lense blind you aswell?
Best answer:
Answer by Guru HankPERMANENT.
Even after a very short exposure, and even when the eclipse is near total. There have been mass tragedies following some eclipses in parts of the world where this was not widely understood. You might not notice the damage has occurred until later. It would then be too late. Never look at the sun directly even part of it, for an instant.
Make a tiny pinhole in a piece of black card, and WITH YOUR BACK TO THE SUN project the light which shines through this onto another piece of card. You will get an image of the solar eclipse as it occurs. Do not risk messing around with bits of 'smoked glass' and other gimmicks like some teachers did with a class when I was a kid. You always end up getting a dangerous exposure.

The eclipse won't have any affect on you. Astrology is just superstition. The stars and planets are located incredibly far away. The shapes of the constellations change over time. The positions of the heavenly bodies simply do NOT affect human destiny. Just think about it-- can you come up with a single scientific explanation for how that's possible? It's ridiculous to think that the cosmos, in all its size and age, revolves around humans.

So I found out that on December 21 2010, there will be a visible lunar eclipse. I really wanna stay up and see it but I don't know what time the eclipse will be visible from where I live in Southern California. Does anyone know?
Best answer:
Answer by Anne MarieHi Y!
The time you'll want to look for Monday night's eclipse is 10:33 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, the moment when the partial eclipse begins.
It takes just over an hour for the earth's shadow to completely engulf the moon, which means that totality arrives at 11:41 p.m. PST and then lasts for another hour and 12 minutes.
Why are others saying December 21st when in fact it's Monday night? The official way the dates of eclipses are reckoned follows Greenwich Mean Time, the time zone of England, and this eclipse indeed happens on Tuesday morning the 21st GMT, and indeed Tuesday evening in New Zealand. In North America, though, it's Monday night, although the eclipse will run past midnight over most of the continent.
You may see some writers giving earlier times for the official start of the eclipse. They're not wrong, technically, but these earlier times are not helpful, and you will not see any eclipse until 10:33 p.m. Pacific Time.
A penumbral eclipse starts at 9:28 p.m. Monday night. A penumbral eclipse means that an observer watching from the moon would see the beginning of a partial eclipse of the sun by the earth. During a partial eclipse of the sun, the amount of light reaching the moon is slightly reduced, much as happens here when we start a partial solar eclipse.
Watching from earth, though, you won't notice anything happening during the penumbral eclipse. If you went out looking at 9:28, you'd likely just grouse that you'd been given wrong information, and disappointedly go to bed. You'll see only a normal full moon if you were to go out looking before 10:33 p.m. PST.
(Actually, if you look carefully, you may be able to notice signs of the deepening penumbral phase in the last few minutes before the start of the partial eclipse at 10:33 p.m. PST. In those last few minutes, the lower left part of the moon is only receiving a fraction of its normal sunlight. It would look to you as though the left "cheek" of the man in the moon (facing from earth) were in need of a shave. It's nothing like the start of the partial eclipse, though.)
This eclipse is shallow, as total lunar eclipses go. That means that during totality, the moon will remain a coppery red. Some total eclipses are deeper, and the moon darkens to the point where you might not even notice it if you didn't know where to look. This eclipse is not one of these.
Total eclipses of the moon occur in runs, every six months or so, usually with three or four total

If a solar eclipse occurs while small kids are at school will the teachers bring them inside or let them see?
Question by IIIIIII: If a solar eclipse occurs while small kids are at school will the teachers bring them inside or let them see?
A solar eclipse occurred when I was 11 and all the kids were outside after lunch. Teachers passed around a few pairs of glasses through which to view the eclipse, but there weren't many pairs for all the kids.
I was too excited to wait and squinted one eye shut and looked directly at the eclipse with the other eye...the next day I was at the eye doctor with an ultraviolet laser burn in the ...cornea, I believe...in other words, a permanent blind spot, which I still have thirty years later.
But what about the younger kids, like 6 or 10 years old? Will teachers protect them? Kids can be extremely curious and excited about these things...I actually plan to keep my youngest son home inside in the event of a solar eclipse...and NOT let him be in school at that time.
People don't understand that the eclipse can seriously and permanently damage the eyes- and I only looked at it for about 7 seconds...while my eyeball was being painlessly burned away from the center outward and I hadn't a clue till it was too late.

What are the farthest points north and south that total solar and lunar eclipses can occur?
Question by Pastor Chad from JesusFreak.com: What are the farthest points north and south that total solar and lunar eclipses can occur?
I was just reading about today's total solar eclipse, which was visible in Siberia, and I got to wondering, what are the farthest points north and south that total eclipses can occur? Can they occur at the poles?
Best answer:
Answer by JeffSolar eclipses can theoretically happen anywhere on the earth where you can see the sun. Think about it this way, during any new moon, there is a point in space near the earth where the shadow of the moon falls. (the moon is always casting a shadow in space behind it) Sometimes we get lucky and that shadow lands on the earth and we call it an eclipse. But there is always a shadow, and as the moon orbits the earth and passes by the sun every month during the new moon, the shadow usually passes above or below the earth. Of course, it could happen to just graze the top or bottom of the earth and cause an eclipse at one of the poles. You don't hear of that happening very often because of random chance--the poles are a small target, just like New York city is a small target. How often does New York get a total solar eclipse? Not very often, but just as often as any other random spot on the earth.
An eclipse of the moon happens on the entire earth/sun facing side of the moon, so it is visible from any part of the earth that is facing the moon at the moment of the eclipse. In other words, during any lunar eclipse, about half of the earth (the half facing the moon) can see the lunar eclipse.

When the next solar eclipse happens, does the Philippines stand a chance to experience it?
Question by Yanka: When the next solar eclipse happens, does the Philippines stand a chance to experience it?
It states in MrEclipse.com that the next solar eclipse will happen on August 1, 2008. It would start in Canada and leave in China. Do you think the Philippines (where I am staying now) will have a chance to be able to get "blocked"?

How much power do we get from the sun every day?
Question by Hiya: How much power do we get from the sun every day?
I need to know how much per square inch at any given time and also the amount the sun gives the earth (in total, the sun is always shining some where) each day.
Best answer:
Answer by Donut TimMost of the Sun’s light is radiated in a direction that does not send it to Earth.
Only 0.000000724654% of it reaches the Earth.
That’s 7.24654 billionths of the Sun’s total light.
The Sunlight that reaches Earth is equal to approximately 1,370 watts per square meter (0.884 watts per square inch) when the sun is at zenith. Because of the atmosphere, the amount of energy that reaches the ground is about 1,000 watts per meter (0.645 watts per square inch) when the sun is directly above and no clouds obscure. (One watt is equal to 1 joule (J) of energy per second.)
The total energy from the Sun that hits Earth is 2,787,020,730,988,480,000 watts.

Q&A: If a solar eclipse occurs while small kids are at school will the teachers bring them inside or let them see?

Astronomy questions regarding the moon phases, superior planets, and hypothetical situations!?
Question by flipit54: Astronomy questions regarding the moon phases, superior planets, and hypothetical situations!?
Any experts on Astronomy? I'm having a really tough time with my homework. My textbook is not helping me at all!
1) What time does the waxing gibbous moon rise? Your choices are noon, 3pm, sunset, 9pm
2) What time does the last quarter moon set? Your choices are sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight.
3) What phases of the superior planets can we see from earth?
4) In an alternate solar system, assume the moon goes around the Earth CLOCKWISE while the earth still goes around the sun counter-clockwise. Is the synodic month shorter than, equal to, or longer than the sidereal month in this setup?
5) Annular eclipses of the Sun occur when the angular size of the moon is smaller than the angular size of the Sun. When will it be easiest, considering the distances between Earth-Moon and Earth-Sun, an annular eclipse rather than a total eclipse to occur?
Any help would be appreciated, I've completed most of my packet but these problems are leaving me up after four hours of work!
Best answer:
Answer by StarryskyFirst quarter rises at noon (six hours or a quarter day after the sun)
Full moon rises when sun sets because it is on opposite side of Earth from sun.
Waxing (growing) gibbous moon is anywhere between first quarter and full phases.
Now you know the answer to #1
Last quarter moon is 6 hours (a quarter day) ahead of the sun, just as first quarter was a quarter day behind the sun. Now you know the answer to #2
When we look at superior planets, those with orbits larger than Earth's orbit, those are Mars and beyond. We can see them when opposite the sun (midnight). Then they are illuminated how much? Superior planets orbit the Sun, part way around then how illuminated? Or farther around? But since they are farther from the Sun than Earth, they can never be between Earth and Sun. They can be on other side of sun and appear in daylight sky (if the air was not so bright or there was a total solar eclipse or you were on the Space Station). Then how would they be illuminated? If you are unsure still, set out a bare light bulb and have another person walk around it. Now you know answer to #3.
I think you know how to set up demonstration for #4 to find the answer. Look up the definitions of the synodic and sidereal months and see how they work with revolution of the moon around the Earth and the revolution of the Earth around the Sun in combination. See how the moon appears against the fixed star background (the wallpaper) as your marble moon goes around the baseball Earth as it goes around the lightbulb Sun.
Number 5 is a bit harder since you must look up the terms annular and total eclipses. Then you can take a piece of

That way, even when you wait the first 48 hours, you can still wait the second and build the habitat in that time. Secondly, I think you posted this in the wrong category. What time would I need to be up to see the lunar eclipse this December?
Question by : What time would I need to be up to see the lunar eclipse this December?

The next total solar eclipse is May 20, 2012. It's an annular eclipse, so it won't cover the entire disk of the sun; it will look like a glowing ring during totality. It will be visible from Japan and the north Pacific Ocean, with a partial eclipse visible from east Asia and western North America. You would need to pay attention to the shadow; it would appear similar to a partial eclipse; you wouldn't know that an eclipse is happening.
The solar eclipses of next year all consist of partial eclipses.

What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
Question by AY0116: What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
There is a total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I don't know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?
Best answer:
Answer by Wild BillThe eclipse actually reduces the light pollution from the Sun to the Earth allowing us to see the brightest objects in the sky such as Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. When the eclipse is over they will fade into the wild blue sky!
