How often do total eclipses happen?


Question by Banana.: How often do total eclipses happen?
So I know a total eclipse happened on Easter Island(Chile) I just wanted to know how often they occur and when and where the next one would be?

Answer by OlympianThere are two types of eclipses; solar and lunar. I can tell you're talking about a solar eclipse, though. They happen approximately 2-4 times a year. The next total solar eclipse is May 20, 2012. It's an annular eclipse, so it won't cover the entire disk of the sun; it will look like a glowing ring during totality. It will be visible from Japan and the north Pacific Ocean, with a partial eclipse visible from east Asia and western North America. You would need to pay attention to the shadow; it would appear similar to a partial eclipse; you wouldn't know that an eclipse is happening.

The solar eclipses of next year all consist of partial eclipses.
