Question by ........: When will the next solar eclipse occur in Las Vegas, Nevada?
Or did I miss it?

Best answer:
Answer by Big Ol' Gal Named HildyAccording to NASA's eclipse site, there's an ANNULAR eclipse due that will be visible very near Las Vegas in 2012 (the darkest portion will be slightly north, according to the map). As to a total eclipse, there's not another one due in Las Vegas at least through the end of the century. Check out the World Atlas of Solar Eclipse Maps on the page below.

The closest TOTAL eclipse to you any time soon will be in 2017 in Oregon; that's not exactly around the corner, but maybe you'll get to go see it :-) I live near Seattle, so maybe I'll be there too!

Q&A: What's the difference between solar and lunar eclipses? Land and sea breezes?

Question by Rad R: What's the difference between solar and lunar eclipses? Land and sea breezes?
I lost it in my notes. LOL. Please help me compare the similarities and differences between solar and lunar eclipses and land and sea breezes!
Thanks, peace!

Best answer:
Answer by NogaA solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. At least two and up to five solar eclipses can occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of them being total eclipses.Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra.

A lunar eclipse is an eclipse which occurs whenever the moon passes behind the earth such that the earth blocks the suns rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, there is always a full moon the night of a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes.

Land breeze: At night, the land cools off quicker than the ocean due to differences in their specific heat values, which forces the dying of the daytime sea breeze. If the land cools below that of the adjacent sea surface temperature, the pressure over the water will be lower than that of the land, setting up a land breeze as long as the environmental surface wind pattern is not strong enough to oppose it. If there is sufficient moisture and instability available, the land breeze can cause showers or even thunderstorms, over the water. Overnight thunderstorm development offshore due to the land breeze can be a good predictor for the activity on land the following day, as long as there are no expected changes to the weather pattern over the following 12–24 hours. This is mainly because the strength of the land breeze is weaker than the sea breeze. The land breeze will die once the land warms up again the next morning.

Sea Breeze: (or onshore breeze) is a wind from the sea that develops over land near coasts. It is formed by increasing temperature differences between the land and water which create a pressure minimum over the land due to its relative warmth and forces higher pressure, cooler air from the sea to move inland. Generally, air temperature gets cooler relative to nearby locations as one moves closer to a large body of water.

Who knows the best place to find good time sequenced pics of or suns spectrum?

Question by pimbroke: Who knows the best place to find good time sequenced pics of or suns spectrum?
I want good color shots of solar spectrum as far back as they go. I know someone knows out there.

Best answer:
Answer by Macho McmanlyNot sure what you mean by spectrum. If you want to see the solar spectrum, it's represented by a consistent diagram of absorption lines found here: http://www.noao.edu/image_gallery/html/im0600.html

If you're just looking for a spinning sun in different spectra (which are only "color" shots because they are false colors chosen by scientists), then maybe below is where you should look.

Live, streaming data on the sun in UV is always coming from STEREO: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/stereo/main/index.html
^That mission also has a live app for iPhone that allows you to choose other wavelengths of light as well.

You can backtrack spectral imagery here as well, but it's not as pretty or inclusive:

How often do moons eclipse one another?

Question by Arex: How often do moons eclipse one another?
In my fantasy book series, the world I write about has got two moons. I thought it would be fun to build a festival around a idea where once a year one of the moons eclipses the other. Scientifically, how far-fetched is this idea? For instance on Mars, do Phobos and Deimos ever eclipse one another and how often does it happen? I'm not opposed to stretching the truth just a bit since it is a fantasy book, but if it's completely scientifically ludicrous or impossible, I'd rather not include it. Thanks for the help

Best answer:
Answer by Big DaddyMartian moons are very different from the earth's moon. I don't think they're relevant.

There's no particular reason that some moons around a planet couldn't undergo periodic or semi-periodic eclipses. The idea that a earth-like planet may have two or more large moons may be the less likely aspect.

But we don't have a lot of samples (just the planets in this solar system) to judge by. So having eclipsing moons in a story isn't beyond any plausibility limit that I'd worry about.

Does the November 28, 2012 lunar eclipse have prophetic significance? Exactly 65 years ago, just before the UN General Assembly voted to partition Palestine and give land to the Jews, a penumbral lunar eclipse occurred. This very same type of eclipse occurred last night before the UN General Assembly is to vote on upgrading Palestine's status and therefore recognize them as a state and therefore possibly divide the land of Israel. Simply interesting... or prophetic? You decide. But watch my video first ;)

What is the believed time when spirit activity is at its highest?

Question by goo_head_83: What is the believed time when spirit activity is at its highest?
I have heard conflicting arguments between midnight and 3am being the time when spirit activity is highest. What is the leading belief of when activity is at its highest? Why is it at its highest at this time and no other time? What evidence has been collected to prove this is the peak time?

Best answer:
Answer by El Nahual JusticieroSome spirits are more comfortable to make themselves present at night time, and others only come if you summon them properly, but spirits seem to be more active on Halloween, Walpurgis Night (April 30), and in the Equinox and Solstice days, this year the next Equinox will be on Sep 22 at 21:18.

What do you think? Answer below!

Halloween Trump Card, Spirit Lights! Here is how to make them: Get yourself a few glass jars... or just glasses they work as well. Then head over to the hardware store and pick up some solar powered garden lamps. They are CHEAP! They only cost about 1-2 bucks! Incredible! If you have some halloween hair dye lying around, great! If not, go grab a .50 bottle and cover the inside of the with it. When done attach the top of the garden lamp to the jar and you now have glowing spirit light which will be charged by the power of the sun. Twitter: twitter.com

Q&A: How much power do we get from the sun every day?

Question by Hiya: How much power do we get from the sun every day?
I need to know how much per square inch at any given time and also the amount the sun gives the earth (in total, the sun is always shining some where) each day.

Best answer:
Answer by Donut TimMost of the Sun’s light is radiated in a direction that does not send it to Earth.

Only 0.000000724654% of it reaches the Earth.
That’s 7.24654 billionths of the Sun’s total light.

The Sunlight that reaches Earth is equal to approximately 1,370 watts per square meter (0.884 watts per square inch) when the sun is at zenith. Because of the atmosphere, the amount of energy that reaches the ground is about 1,000 watts per meter (0.645 watts per square inch) when the sun is directly above and no clouds obscure. (One watt is equal to 1 joule (J) of energy per second.)

The total energy from the Sun that hits Earth is 2,787,020,730,988,480,000 watts.

Annular Solar Eclipse ("Ring Of Fire") on May 20, 2012. As seen from the Northwestern United States. Extra footage of the "Super Moon" of a couple of weeks prior. Two amazing cosmic events! As if the "Super Moon" of May 5, 2012 wasn't enough to create a sense of awe for the universe that we are a part of, the Annular Solar Eclipse ("Ring Of Fire Eclipse") a couple of weeks later on May 20, 2012 was enough to seal the deal. This spectacular event was truly a sight to behold! The Solar Eclipse carries the most potent astrological energy of 2011 and marks the return of the cardinal grand cross with the Sun and Moon in Cancer lining up with Saturn in Libra, Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn to form a potent cross - another millennial moment, another portal of radical action and overhaul of the old order, and potential for personal and spiritual transformation.

Does anyone know when the solar system came the closest to a full syzygy?

Question by Izayah: Does anyone know when the solar system came the closest to a full syzygy?
I know we have never had a full one, but when was the closest to it?

Best answer:
Answer by RaymondIt depends what you mean by a syzygy. Purists will insist that a true syzygy means a perfect alignment, so that one object appears merged with the other (eclipses, appulses, etc.). The syzygy of March 21, 1894, involving four bodies (Earth was not one of them) is the closest that I know about.

However, the "modern" definition of syzygy, especially as used in astrology or in hoax-building, is very vague. The last syzygy involving ALL the other planets (as seen from Earth) was in March 1982, when all the planets (including Pluto back then) were in the same 95-degree sector.

This fact was used in the development of a doomsday hoax called The Jupiter Effect (written in 1974).

This is the hoax that was copied-and-pasted into the Big 2012 Hoax.

How to safely look at a solar eclipse?

Question by Diego Palma: How to safely look at a solar eclipse?
I want to know how to look at a solar eclipse because the one today is going to pass by where i live
And i would like to know if it will damage my eyes if i look at it
Can i see it through a camera?
Do sunglasses help?
Or is it something that is designated to look at the solar eclipse

Best answer:
Answer by TechwingYou need something like carbon-arc-welding glasses in order to view this type of eclipse safely. They should be at least shade #14.

You could photograph it with a digital camera as long as the camera has an electronic viewfinder and not an optical viewfinder. However, this may permanently damage the camera.

Another good way to see the eclipse is by using a special solar attachment on a telescope that projects an image of the sun onto a screen (NOT by looking directly into the telescope, which will produce blindness).

Sunglasses are not dark enough to help.

The only solar eclipses that can be safely viewed with the naked eye are total solar eclipses, when the sun is completely covered. This is not that type of eclipse. The sun's edge will still be visible during this eclipse, which makes it dangerous to look at with the naked eye. It also makes the eclipse far less impressive, since it doesn't get very dark and the portion of the sun that is visible is so bright that it makes everything else invisible.

My own opinion is that only a total solar eclipse is worth getting excited over. Partial and annular eclipses are a disappointment, as well as an eye hazard.

Can Staring at an Eclipse Really make you go Blind?

Question by Malevolence: Can Staring at an Eclipse Really make you go Blind?
Can it make you go blind or just hurt your eyes? Temporary blindness or permanent? And can video taping an Eclipse, looking at the eclipse through a camera lense blind you aswell?

Best answer:
Answer by Guru HankPERMANENT.

Even after a very short exposure, and even when the eclipse is near total. There have been mass tragedies following some eclipses in parts of the world where this was not widely understood. You might not notice the damage has occurred until later. It would then be too late. Never look at the sun directly even part of it, for an instant.

Make a tiny pinhole in a piece of black card, and WITH YOUR BACK TO THE SUN project the light which shines through this onto another piece of card. You will get an image of the solar eclipse as it occurs. Do not risk messing around with bits of 'smoked glass' and other gimmicks like some teachers did with a class when I was a kid. You always end up getting a dangerous exposure.

Is there anyone trying to create a cheaper and more efficient solar panel?

Question by Estr Bien Cvzoch: Is there anyone trying to create a cheaper and more efficient solar panel?
I read on CNN's website last year some company was creating a very cheap type of solar panel, that needs minimal maintenance and and has minimal glare from the sun. And the creator of the project said he one day wanted to cover every rooftop in the US with these solar panels. Seems like a good idea to me but I havent heared anything of it for a long time and I don't know what they are called... any help?

At the solar industry's largest event, Intersolar Europe, 2011 SunPower launched its new 96-cell E20 modules, which are the industry's first commercially-available solar panels to achieve total area efficiencies of 20% and above. Jorn Jugens, SunPower's managing director, Germany had the honour of discussing with PV-Tech the key characteristics of the module, which includes SunPower's 22.4% efficient 'Maxeon' cell technology. The modules will be offered in Europe and Australia this year, with availability extended in North America and Asia in early 2012. All of SunPowers production lines will be transferred to the new Maxeon cell process by mid-next year.

What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?

Question by AY0116: What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
There is a total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I don't know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?

Best answer:
Answer by Wild BillThe eclipse actually reduces the light pollution from the Sun to the Earth allowing us to see the brightest objects in the sky such as Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. When the eclipse is over they will fade into the wild blue sky!

A video taken by TQ friend and traveler Bob Stephens on the 2012 Australia Total Solar Eclipse Tour! "A group of eclipse chasers on the TravelQuest International trip viewed the eclipse from Wetherby Station on the Atherton Tableland in Queensland, Australia. The group left the Thala Beach Lodge at 3:30 AM on Eclipse Day to increase its chances of seeing the eclipse. Forecasts called for coastal clouds, which impacted Carines and Port Douglas. Clouds usually stopped along the coastal ridge. Although clouds did somewhat get over the ridge, and provided quite a scare just minutes before 2nd Contact, the group of nearly 200 only had to contend with some light cirrus clouds during totality." -Bob Stephens

How do I know what time the Lunar Eclipse will take place?

Question by Rain Dancer: How do I know what time the Lunar Eclipse will take place?
Tonight is the lunar eclipse and I would like to see it, but I cant find anything that will give me a time to shoot for. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Best answer:
Answer by Dr BobThere will be nothing to see. It's such a minor penumbral eclipse that the moon will simply look like an ordinary full moon.

Here are the times:
7:04:17 PM EDT eclipse begins
8:39:10 PM EDT maximum eclipse
10:14:09 PM EDT eclipse ends

The moon will be up for much of the eclipse on the east coast of the US; on the west coast, however, the moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse.

If you had precise measuring equipment, you might be able to detect a slight gradation of brightness, but you won't see anything with your naked eye.

Give your answer to this question below!

All in all, this eclipse isn't too special, but it isn't too lame either. While penumbral eclipses are harder to see than partial ones due to the less intense shadow cast on them, they still can be seen if, as in this one, the moon moves deep enough into the penumbra. However, even then, the only visible changes in the moon's brightness is that one side will appear slightly darker than the other one, and you will likely need to look for this to notice anything unusual. Still, if you have free time on the day this eclipse will happen on, I would advise you look for it when it's near its peak. An eclipse is an eclipse, no matter how intense it is. Also make sure to Check your calendars and local news to get more info on what calendar day this eclipse will occur on. THis is because the date this and every other eclipse is said to occur on relates to what time it is at the prime meridian while the eclipse happens, which means that the actual date of the eclipse where you live could be one day before or after the given date, and this can seriously screw up your plans if you want to see the eclipse. What is the difference between a lunar eclipse and the new moon?

As much detail and links helpful!

Best answer:
Answer by KA new moon is when the moon is directly between Earth and the Sun, and is thus not illuminated at all and invisible to us. A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon, when the moon is exactly opposite the Sun and fully illuminated, but then passes through Earth's shadow, dimming it and making it appear reddish-brown.

Eclipse 2012 When dawn breaks across Cairns and Great Barrier Reef on 14 November 2012, the early chatter of birds and animals will be replaced by an eerie silence. The temperature will drop as the moon overtakes the sun casts a shadow so large the land will be plunged into darkness. Eclipse 2012 is attracting world-wide attention from visitors planning holidays around the event which is best viewed from the Cairns region. The total solar eclipse will be seen along a strip of land about 200km wide which crosses the top of eastern Australia and the Coral Sea. For a detailed map, please click here. It is rare for a total eclipse to be visible from land, so the excitement is building for those who want to share in this extraordinary phenomenon. Three charter flights from Japan are bringing eclipse-watchers, and several cruise ships are scheduled to be in the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region in time for passengers to see the eclipse. Accommodation inquiries are flooding in and special events have been planned to celebrate Eclipse 2012. Find a viewing spot from a beach anywhere between Bloomfield and Innisfail; a Great Barrier Reef island; or head for a wide open space on the Atherton Tableland or Cape York Peninsula.

Q&A: Is there different variations of a total eclipse?

Question by Chris: Is there different variations of a total eclipse?
In other words, is the position of the moon during a total eclipse exactly on the same spot everytime? I have heard of an annular eclipse in which the moon appears smaller leaving a thick ring around the moon's shadow. I was thinking maybe there was variations in between the two that are visible to, maybe, a high precision instrument since every total eclipse to the naked eye is exactly the same.

Scores of amateur stargazers and scientists will travel long distances for the eclipse, which will last for about five minutes. The eclipse will first appear in the Gulf of Khambhat just north of Mumbai. It will move east across India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China before hitting the Pacific. The eclipse will cross some southern Japanese islands and will last be visible from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. Can a solar eclipse happen at night?

Question by Elfie: Can a solar eclipse happen at night?
I know that a solar eclipse is when the moon passes in front of the sun, so does that mean a solar eclipse cannot happen at night? Can a lunar eclipse happen at night?

Best answer:
Answer by campbelp2002Yes, because half of Earth is in night all the time. But which half changes all the time. So during every eclipse it is night somewhere on Earth and daytime somewhere else on Earth. The same with a lunar eclipse.

Dedicated to Mars Society of which I am a member If viewed from the surface of Mars near its equator, full Phobos looks about one third as big as the Earth's full moon from Earth. It has an angular diameter of between 8' (rising) and 12' (overhead). It would look smaller when the observer is further away from the Martian equator, and is completely invisible (always beyond the horizon) from Mars' polar ice caps. Deimos looks more like a bright star or planet for an observer on Mars, only slightly bigger than Venus looks from Earth; it has an angular diameter of about 2'. The Sun's angular diameter as seen from Mars, by contrast, is about 21'. Thus there are no total solar eclipses on Mars, as the moons are far too small to completely cover the Sun. On the other hand, total lunar eclipses of Phobos are very common, happening almost every night. See also Transit of Phobos from Mars and Transit of Deimos from Mars for eclipse-like events. The motions of Phobos and Deimos would appear very different from that of our own Moon. Speedy Phobos rises in the west, sets in the east, and rises again in just eleven hours, while Deimos, being only just outside synchronous orbit, rises as expected in the east but very slowly. Despite its 30 hour orbit, it takes 2.7 days to set in the west as it slowly falls behind the rotation of Mars, and has long again to rise. Due to the small size of Phobos (22.2 Km) and its rapid orbital motion, an observer on the surface of Mars would never ...

Are any of these "green energy" companies legit or are they all setup to launder federal money back to donors?

Question by Smart Guy: Are any of these "green energy" companies legit or are they all setup to launder federal money back to donors?
Solyndra, Abound Solar, Energy Conversion Devices, BrightSource, LSP Energy, Evergreen Solar, Ener1, SunPower, Beacon Power, ECOtality, A123, Uni-Solar, Azure Dynamics, and Solar Trust of America

All of them received money per Obama Admin policy choices in 2009 and all would file for bankruptcy within 20 months from receipt of that money.

Do you think any of them are legit?

I've had the Blueline Innovation Power Cost Monitor and Wifi Monitor installed for a couple months now. It has made me very aware of my power consumption and has shown me when and where the most usage occurs. It has also prompted me to invest in solar. I recently purchased a 3.9Kw system from Sun Solar. This shows the difference from what I pay with and without solar. Before solar I average 1152kwh a month. We are on the PGE average monthly bill. We were paying 6 a month to PGE. This gets re-evaluated every 4 months. The previous 4 months it was 4. The 4 month period before that it was 1. It has been steadily climbing and I am sick of paying PGE. My plans are to evaluate this system and pay it off over 2 years. Then I will reevaluate my usage and by then the solar panel capacity will increase and price will decrease. I will then more than double my system size and totally eliminate my PGE bill. (hopefully;-) We dont yet have a PGE netmetering capable smart meter but when we test the system we are producing more during the 7am to 5:30pm hours than we are using. I've logged into PGE website and our usage shows 0. Once they can measure what we are over producing we will have more data. Equipment: Sunpower - Sun Solar Installer k 12 x 327Watt E20 Sunpower Solar Panels = 3.924Kw System 1 x SPR-4000m Sunpower Central Inverter 1 x Sunpower Monitoring Communication Device PGE - 6 a month average bill. Q&A: Next eclipse in 2010 and what is the time?

Question by priyanka: Next eclipse in 2010 and what is the time?
I'm pregnant and i just want to know when is next eclipse and time and what i have to do during that time?

Best answer:
Answer by AlanJuly 11th 2010, the time depends on what time zone you live in.

What to do? well the eclipse is in the south pacific so you need to get on a ship if you want to see it, there are plenty of cruise ships going to the eclipse but they might all be booked up by now.

I suggest you search the internet, if there are no tickets left try for a cancellation, otherwise you will have to hire a long range jet plane and that's expensive

Good Luck with the eclipse, and the birth. Alan
