Summary: There are hundreds of festivals that are celebrated annually in India. It is an ideal way to understand the local culture and witness some unique practices during this time. The Janmastami is one such festival that is celebrated to honour the birth of the god Krishna in avatar form. The incredible India is known to be the birthplace of two of the most intriguing religions in the world. Majority of Indians are Hindu and given that this is the birth place of the religion. India is famous for its festivals and there is said to be over 300 celebrated each year. Some of the more popular ones include Holi, Janmastami, Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, Mahatma Gandhi Festival, Modhera Dance Festival, Pongal, Ram Navami, Ugadi, Cheti Chand, Sindhu Darshan Festival, Hemis Festival, Solar Eclipse, Ganesh Festival, Navarti and Laxmi Puja. The Janmastami is a celebration of the birth of the god Vishnu in avatar form. Usually this celebration falls in the month of August, but according to the Hindu calendar it is on the eighth day of the month of Bhadrapada. During this festival many locals will re-enact the dramatic events of the god Krishna, who was known to be playful. One such practice is where young men form a human pyramid to reach a pot of butter, which needs to be broken. Once the pot is reached, the contents of the buttermilk are poured on all the participants as an act of unity.
