The Kanto Region (Tokyo) was expecting cloudy skies during the viewing time of the annular solar eclipse, but miraculously the skies cleared up for an awesome view of this natural phenomenon. Starting at about 6:50am the moon began to cross over the sun; coming to peak at about 7:32am, lasting for about 5 gracious minutes, till about 7:37am; then the moon made its pass which ended at about 9:02am. Absolutely AMAZING!!! The last view of this type of eclipse in the Kanto Region was 130 years ago, and the next one in the will be 300 years later...so this was a total blessing. Enjoy the pictures and video from Saitama (above Tokyo), Japan. Japan: 1987 was the last annular eclipse seen from Okinawa. And the next one will be in Hokkaido in 18 years.

Can I photograph a total solar eclipse with a digital camera?

Question by : Can I photograph a total solar eclipse with a digital camera?
I have found tons of information about using an SLR or basic "point and shoot" cameras but not much on using a very basic digital camera (not a DSLR). This may sound completely stupid but I don't know much about this. Can I look at the eclipse using my view screen since you can't look at a partial eclipse directly? Do I need a special filter so I don't damage my camera? Any help and guidelines are greatly appreciated.

Answer by AndreasYou won't damage the camera, but the picture will likely be completely washed out, due to overexposure. Use a pinhole camera (look up plans online) to view the eclipse.

In part 1 of this series, equinoxes and solstices were discussed. Depending on where you live, you can mark your calendar and plan on taking advantage of some of these other visible celestial phenomena, local weather conditions permitting. In this article, part 2 of a three-part series, upcoming full or partial lunar and solar eclipses in 2006 will be discussed.Full or Partial Solar and Lunar EclipsesSolar EclipseDuring a solar eclipse, the moon moves between the sun and the earth. The light from the outer part of the sun's atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible during a total solar eclipse. The maximum duration of a total solar eclipse is about seven and a half minutes, but these are rare.o A total eclipse of the sun will occur on March 29, 2006 that should be visible in Asia and Africa.o On September 22, 2006, a partial eclipse of the sun will occur that should be visible from the northern coast of South America and the Atlantic Ocean.Many solar phenomena can only be studied during a total eclipse of the sun. Among these are the elements of the sun's corona and the bending of light rays passing close to the sun because of the sun's gravitational field. The great brilliance of the solar disk and the sun's brightening of the earth's atmosphere make observations of the corona and nearby stars impossible except during a solar eclipse. The coronagraph, a specially constructed photographic telescope, does allow direct observation of the edge of the solar disk and corona. Scientific observations of a solar eclipse are extremely valuable, especially when the eclipse path travels across large areas of land permitting a number of observation points along with extended observation time. These observations may provide information on how minute variations in the sun affect earth's weather, and how predictions of solar flares can be improved.Solar FlaresSolar flares are another phenomena that are much more highly visible during a solar eclipse. Answer by Anne MarieBoth earth and moon are constantly revolving around the sun. They are also revolving around their common center of gravity as they move around the sun, but they constantly move around the sun.

Their speed of revolution and the vast amount of angular momentum keeps them from simply dropping like proverbial rocks into the sun.

Think of astronauts aboard the Space Station. They are weightless, yet they are just a hundred miles or so farther from the center of the earth than you and me. Why? Why don't they fall?

The answer is that they ARE falling. But as fast as they fall, their momentum has carried them forward so that they endlessly fall around the earth, not into it. The same with the earth and moon, relative to the sun, during a total eclipse and at all other times.

I am taking an astronomy class and I need some help. I was asked the question to find the last year that had the max (5) solar eclipses possible for one year. The only way I know how to find it is to look through NASA's website starting this year and working backward but that could take forever. Does anyone know the answer?

What is the least number of eclipses (lunar & solar combined) possible
Every year? How many solar eclipses & how many lunar eclipses?


When was the last year in which the minimum number of eclipses (lunar

In the simplest form, it's all a natural and episodic part of a Solar-Lunar cycle.The first piece of the eclipse puzzle is understanding the greater cycles. The effect of the Sun and Moon on the tides, just as a graphic and easy-to-grasp example, that's a starting place. As the Moon rotates around in its orbit, the effect pulls stronger at certain times, and the net result is higher tides.High tide and low tide demonstrate the gravitational effect of the Moon on large bodies of water.The tides run greater, a larger displacement, when the Moon is full, and when the Moon is new. When I ran night club, I noticed that liquor sales spiked upwards, greater revenue, under a full moon. Then, two, three days afterwards, there was a greater chance of having to call the cops to break up a fight.That's the simplest explanation of the lunar cycles. Extended, then, when the eclipse patterns unfurl?A lunar eclipse is a super full moon, and a solar eclipse is a super new moon. The lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth gets in the way of the full moon, so that, in effect, the Sun, Earth and the Moon are all in straight line. It's also easy to imagine that kind of energy just pulling a person apart, split in too many directions.The solar eclipse occurs when the Moon lines up right between Earth and the Sun. It's like a supercharged New Moon.If the full moon is a time of celebration and harvest, then tracking backwards, the new moon is a time of planting, sowing seeds that can be harvested under that full moon.
