How convenient is it for solar eclipses that the sun and moon have the same apparent size?

Question by Stu C: How convenient is it for solar eclipses that the sun and moon have the same apparent size?
It seems that in a total solar eclipse... the moon covers the sun almost perfectly.

Is there any reason for this or is it just by chance? How close are they really in apparent size?

the moon is closer to the Earth -- a lot closer than the sun.
