Answer by John SA lunar eclipse is when the moon goes into the Shadow of the earth
A solar eclipse is when the shadow of the moon falls on the earth

They often happen within two weeks of each other.
EG 21 Dec 2010 Lunar eclipse followed by a solar eclipse on 4 Jan 2011
