Q&A: What would cause a permenent total solar eclipse?

Question by Gatesy: What would cause a permenent total solar eclipse?
Im in the middle of doing a media class assignment and i have to make a low budget trailer for a disaster movie. i wondered if it was possible to have a permenant total solar eclipse, and what sort of thing would cause it?, i would love some ideas. .

Best answer:
Answer by urwumpeso far, only taking the sun away. by orbital mechanics you could create a long solar eclipse, but no permanent. A nuclear winter could engulf the whole Earth in clouds, shading the sun.

But as it is going to be a movie, feel free to be unrealistic, as long as you can manage three things:

1. Entertain.
2. Entertain.
3. Manage a suspension of disbelief: Make it impossible for people to question your logic before the movie is over.

Is something going to happen between May 20th, 2012 and June 6th or just after?

Question by Michael: Is something going to happen between May 20th, 2012 and June 6th or just after?
I know the solar eclipse is going to happen on may 20 , 2012 but I just saw video saying that theirs going to be a big earthquake and that Nostradamus and Mayans predicted something was going to happen. Is it true what is really going to happen in 2 days I know the solar eclipse but anything else? Should I be worry about? Is the world going to end on December 21, 2012 ? I'm really scare right now

Best answer:
Answer by Vic RattleheadYes, the people that lived 1400 years ago predicted the exact date of the exact natural disaster of something that will happen in a place they didn't even know about at the time using the stars.

...

The Mayan calendar ends December 21, 2012. It's the end of something called the Long Cycle. As soon as it ends, a new one begins. They just didn't record it. It's like the end of the year. The world doesn't end when there are no more days in the year, a new year just starts instead.

Can a solar eclipse blind you?

Best answer:
Answer by 80istLegally blind, yes, but probably not completely blind. (Legal blindness is defined as being able to make out the big E and not much more on a vision chart with the aid of glasses or contact lenses.) When you watch a solar eclipse, your pupils dilate because of the low light level. When the eclipse ends, the sliver of sun that becomes visible is intense enough to burn your dilated pupils.

Q&A: When will the next total solar eclipse be viewable in Texas?

Question by Carefree Alpaca!: When will the next total solar eclipse be viewable in Texas?
I'd also like to know what part of Texas it would cross over. I know we had one where I am about 10-15 years ago, but I'm trying to figure the odds of me seeing one in my lifetime.

Thanks in advance!

Best answer:
Answer by Anne MarieHi Tex!

You don't have all that long to wait! The total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 will sweep across Texas in a wide band. Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and Waco lie in the path of totality, which just brushes San Antonio. Those from Texarkana to Del Rio and most of the Texas Hill Country also see the total eclipse. The rest of the state gets to see a partial eclipse that morning.

There are a few other solar eclipses of note over the next sixteen years, but none will actually be total in Texas.

1) If you happen to be in Lubbock, you'll see an annular eclipse of the sun the evening of May 20, 2012. In an annular eclipse, the moon moves completely across the solar disc, but since the moon is in the part of its orbit that carries it farthest from earth, it won't be large enough to completely cover the sun. A ring of sunlight remains visible throughout. The rest of Texas sees the start of a partial eclipse at sunset that evening, 4 1/2 years from now.

2) You can see a shallow partial eclipse the afternoon of October 23, 2014. Only about 50% of the sun will be covered in the panhandle, less than that in the rest of the state.

3) There is a total solar eclipse in Missouri on August 21, 2017 you could see. But it will be only a partial eclipse in Texas. About 80% of the solar disc is covered in north Texas, dwindling to 60% in the Rio Grande valley.

4) Less than six months before the total eclipse of 2024, most of south Texas sees an annular eclipse, the morning of October 24, 2023. San Antonio, Odessa, and Corpus Christi lie in the path of maximum eclipse, which will also brush Lubbock again. Places along the eastern border of New Mexico will see both annular eclipses, this and the one on May 20, 2012.

When the next solar eclipse happens, does the Philippines stand a chance to experience it?

Question by Yanka: When the next solar eclipse happens, does the Philippines stand a chance to experience it?
It states in MrEclipse.com that the next solar eclipse will happen on August 1, 2008. It would start in Canada and leave in China. Do you think the Philippines (where I am staying now) will have a chance to be able to get "blocked"?

Best answer:
Answer by YaybobYou will see at most a partial eclipse, maybe less. There is a map at http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/OH/OHfigures/OH2008-Fig03.pdf that shows the Philippines on the line between seeing it and not.

North America's next solar eclipse is in 2017, I want to watch it. But why do I need to put on dimming glasses? Isn't the sunlight being blocked out by the moon enough to not do any harm?

Best answer:
Answer by J. Frost"Isn't the sunlight being blocked out by the moon enough to not do any harm?"
No, theres still enough light to damage your eyes. Not so-much when the moon completely obscures the sun, but in the transition phases, where the sun is only partially covered. Its easy to not notice the damage being done.

What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?

Question by AY0116: What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
There is a total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I don't know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?

Best answer:
Answer by Wild BillThe eclipse actually reduces the light pollution from the Sun to the Earth allowing us to see the brightest objects in the sky such as Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. When the eclipse is over they will fade into the wild blue sky!

I know that a solar eclipse is when the moon passes in front of the sun, so does that mean a solar eclipse cannot happen at night? Can a lunar eclipse happen at night?

Best answer:
Answer by campbelp2002Yes, because half of Earth is in night all the time. But which half changes all the time. So during every eclipse it is night somewhere on Earth and daytime somewhere else on Earth. The same with a lunar eclipse.

When the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, it causes the moon to look very unusual for a short period of time. This event is called a lunar eclipse, and it occurs roughly twice a year. Does anyone know when the solar system came the closest to a full syzygy?

Question by Izayah: Does anyone know when the solar system came the closest to a full syzygy?
I know we have never had a full one, but when was the closest to it?

Best answer:
Answer by RaymondIt depends what you mean by a syzygy. Purists will insist that a true syzygy means a perfect alignment, so that one object appears merged with the other (eclipses, appulses, etc.). The syzygy of March 21, 1894, involving four bodies (Earth was not one of them) is the closest that I know about.

However, the "modern" definition of syzygy, especially as used in astrology or in hoax-building, is very vague. The last syzygy involving ALL the other planets (as seen from Earth) was in March 1982, when all the planets (including Pluto back then) were in the same 95-degree sector.

This fact was used in the development of a doomsday hoax called The Jupiter Effect (written in 1974).

This is the hoax that was copied-and-pasted into the Big 2012 Hoax.

A Solar eclipse never happens randomly. It belongs to a certain Saros family. This Solar eclipse in Scorpio at 22 degrees belongs to the series 15N. Such a series produces around 70 eclipses over a period of approximately 1300 years. Q&A: Solar Eclipse In Nanjing, China?

Question by Gnorts: Solar Eclipse In Nanjing, China?
There is going to be a solar eclipse in Nanjing, China and one of my friends is going to take pictures of the solar eclipse. How can you make a lens to put on to a digital camera for the solar eclipse?

Best answer:
Answer by aliPhotographing an eclipse of the Sun is fun and easy. However, you will need to use a special Solar Filter to protect your eyes and your camera.

A solar eclipse occurs whenever the Moon's shadow falls on the Earth. This can only happen during New Moon when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. Although there is a New Moon every 29 1/2 days, there are usually only 2 or 3 solar eclipses each year. That's because the Moon's orbit is tipped 5 degrees to Earth's so the Moon's shadow misses Earth during most New Moons. (see: Solar Eclipses For Beginners)

Watching and photographing an eclipse of the Sun is a relaxing activity since it progresses at a leisurely pace. The eclipse begins as a small notch slowly appears along one edge of the Sun. During the next hour, the Moon gradually covers more and more of the Sun's bright disk. If the eclipse is a total one, the last remaining minutes of the partial phases can be quite dramatic and beautiful. The crescent of the Sun grows thinner as the Moon's shadow approaches. The abrupt darkness of totallity is stunning and quite unlike you've ever seen. And the incredible solar corona is simply the most awe-inspiring naked-eye sight in all of nature. Certainly the most a remarkable sight (see: The Experience of Totality)....

The world doesn't end when there are no more days in the year, a new year just starts instead.

if the orbital velocity of an eclipsing binary is 153 km/s and the smaller start becomes completely eclipsed i?

Question by sarah v: if the orbital velocity of an eclipsing binary is 153 km/s and the smaller start becomes completely eclipsed i?
if the orbital velocity of an eclipsing binary is 153 km/s and the smaller star becomes eclipsed in 2.5 hours what is it's diameter?

Best answer:
Answer by Simon van DijkIt is just it takes 2.5 hours = 8000 seconds to eclipse. With 153,000 m/s it travels 1.224.10^9 m.
This could be the diameter of the star. But this implies that the bigger star has a negligible velocity. That is not the case. In a binary the 2 stars must have the same angular velocity: they must be opposite each other relative to the center of gravity. If the heavy star is 10 times heavier than the other one. The center of gravity is at 10 to 1 distance from the big star, so their orbits are 1 to 10 relative, That makes the orbital speed 10 to 1.

So the 1.2 million kilometer (about 90% the size of the sun) is only an estimate.

On July 11, 1991, a total solar eclipse was visible from Hawaii and Mexico. Some of Ufology's best, yet controversial videos were taken by the citizens of Mexico. The objects in questions have been explained away by debunkers as the planet Venus or Jupiter, or other misidentified conventional flying craft. Take a look at the evidence and see if you think that the objects in question were in fact, a planet, comet, or other atmospheric phenomena. The majority of video taken over Mexico was recorded using video cameras which were generally available to the public at the time, videocassette (VHS) camcorders. Shortly after 1:00 PM, the eclipse began. Hundreds of camcorders and cameras were ready to document the event. As some of the waiting cameramen scanned the sky, something unrelated to the eclipse caught their eye in the darkening sky; at first the object appeared to be a small, shining star-like object. As all eyes watched the skies, a number of videographers captured the unknown object/objects. An initial investigation into the footage taken during the eclipse listed as many as 17 different videos taken. www.ufocasebook.com

How are small images of the sun in partial eclipse, seen under the shades of tree during solar eclipse?

Question by Mahesh: How are small images of the sun in partial eclipse, seen under the shades of tree during solar eclipse?
Prior to the total solar eclipse, you may be able to look at the shadow thrown by a tree onto the ground. Often thousands of small images of the sun in partial eclipse will be visible. How does this happen? Does this phenomena have any thing to do with the term,'Fraunhoffer Diffraction?

Best answer:
Answer by Roger KDon't know if it is related to Fraunhoffer Diffraction, but each opening between the leaves through which the sun shines acts like a pinhole camera to project the image of the eclipsed sun on the ground.

Is there different variations of a total eclipse?

Question by Chris: Is there different variations of a total eclipse?
In other words, is the position of the moon during a total eclipse exactly on the same spot everytime? I have heard of an annular eclipse in which the moon appears smaller leaving a thick ring around the moon's shadow. I was thinking maybe there was variations in between the two that are visible to, maybe, a high precision instrument since every total eclipse to the naked eye is exactly the same.
Sorry i meant variation in position as in distance.

Best answer:
Answer by Foxyes and no it is in the same spot for viewing on how it would appear and in diffrent parts of the earthand its only once a year that theres a total solar eclipse but never the exact same spot in space

When will the next solar eclipse occur in Las Vegas, Nevada?

Question by ........: When will the next solar eclipse occur in Las Vegas, Nevada?
Or did I miss it?

Best answer:
Answer by Big Ol' Gal Named HildyAccording to NASA's eclipse site, there's an ANNULAR eclipse due that will be visible very near Las Vegas in 2012 (the darkest portion will be slightly north, according to the map). As to a total eclipse, there's not another one due in Las Vegas at least through the end of the century. Check out the World Atlas of Solar Eclipse Maps on the page below.

The closest TOTAL eclipse to you any time soon will be in 2017 in Oregon; that's not exactly around the corner, but maybe you'll get to go see it :-) I live near Seattle, so maybe I'll be there too!

How do I know what time the Lunar Eclipse will take place?

Question by Rain Dancer: How do I know what time the Lunar Eclipse will take place?
Tonight is the lunar eclipse and I would like to see it, but I cant find anything that will give me a time to shoot for. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Best answer:
Answer by Dr BobThere will be nothing to see. It's such a minor penumbral eclipse that the moon will simply look like an ordinary full moon.

Here are the times:
7:04:17 PM EDT eclipse begins
8:39:10 PM EDT maximum eclipse
10:14:09 PM EDT eclipse ends

The moon will be up for much of the eclipse on the east coast of the US; on the west coast, however, the moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse.

If you had precise measuring equipment, you might be able to detect a slight gradation of brightness, but you won't see anything with your naked eye.

Here's the NASA information for this eclipse:

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

All in all, this eclipse isn't too special, but it isn't too lame either. While penumbral eclipses are harder to see than partial ones due to the less intense shadow cast on them, they still can be seen if, as in this one, the moon moves deep enough into the penumbra. However, even then, the only visible changes in the moon's brightness is that one side will appear slightly darker than the other one, and you will likely need to look for this to notice anything unusual. Still, if you have free time on the day this eclipse will happen on, I would advise you look for it when it's near its peak. An eclipse is an eclipse, no matter how intense it is. Also make sure to Check your calendars and local news to get more info on what calendar day this eclipse will occur on. THis is because the date this and every other eclipse is said to occur on relates to what time it is at the prime meridian while the eclipse happens, which means that the actual date of the eclipse where you live could be one day before or after the given date, and this can seriously screw up your plans if you want to see the eclipse. Why are solar eclipses shorter than lunar eclipses?

Question by pangalicious: Why are solar eclipses shorter than lunar eclipses?
Lunar eclipses usually last anywhere from like 1-3 hours, whereas solar eclipses are just a few minutes long. Why is this?

Best answer:
Answer by daiquirikisscuz in a solar eclipse the moon is in between the earth and the sun, and since the moon and sun alignment isn't very long lasting, it's short. Where as the lunar eclipse is passing through the earth's shadow, meaning, the earth is in between the sun and the moon. The Earth and sun alignment is much slower moving than the moon, so it lasts longer.

At least two and up to five solar eclipses can occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of them being total eclipses.Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra. A total solar eclipse plunged northern Queensland into darkness for two minutes, delighting crowds packed on the beach in Cairns. Australians donned protective glasses as the clouds parted to allow them to witness one of nature's greatest phenomena -- a total eclipse of the sun. All eyes and cameras turned to the heavens over tropical north Queensland as the moon began moving between the Earth and the sun, like a small bite which gradually increases in size. Cloud cover threatened to spoil the party and huge cheers erupted when they parted to give tens of thousands of eclipse hunters a perfect view of totality -- when the moon completely covers the sun and a faint halo or corona appears. The path of the eclipse got under way shortly after daybreak when the moon's shadow, or umbra, fell in the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park in the Northern Territory, about 155 miles east of Darwin. The umbra then moved eastward before alighting in north Queensland -- one of the few places it could be viewed by humans and where tourists and scientists flocked to witness the region's first total solar eclipse in 1300 years. Q&A: Atheists, don't you find it strange that the Moon blocks the Sun perfectly in a total solar eclipse?

Question by Wayne: Atheists, don't you find it strange that the Moon blocks the Sun perfectly in a total solar eclipse?
I've just finished watching a science documentary and I was shocked to learn how rare in the universe a total solar eclipse is. On Earth we are extremely lucky that the Moon is just the right distance from the Sun for it to cover it perfectly in a total solar eclipse. As soon as I learned that fact I knew God was the reason. There's no way it was a coincidence.

Atheists, don't you find it strange? Surely the truth is staring you right in the face and you are looking the other way?

On Sunday, 11 July 2010 , a Total Eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow crosses the South Pacific Ocean where it makes no landfall except for Mangaia (Cook Islands) and Easter Island (Isla de Pascua). The path of totality ends just after reaching southern Chile and Argentina. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering the South Pacific and southern South America. As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon fully or partially covers the Sun as viewed from some location on Earth. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth. At least two, and up to five, solar eclipses occur each year; no more than two can be total eclipses.Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path traced by the Moon's umbra. A total solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon. Nevertheless, in ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens. A total solar eclipse can be frightening to people who are unaware of their astronomical explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear in the middle of the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes. The moon will begin slipping into the earth's shadow at 1:30 a.m. and become immersed in darkness at 2:41 a.m., leaving only a coppery glow that will last about an hour, according to David L. DeBruyn, curator emeritus of the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium a the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

Tuesday's eclipse is also special because it occurs with the moon almost as high in the sky as it can go.

West Michigan won't get another lunar eclipse opportunity until April 2014, DeBruyn said.

Where can you see a partial eclipse?

Question by Dogz_Luver: Where can you see a partial eclipse?
If one person is in California and the other is in New Jersey, will they theoretically both be able to see a partial/annular eclipse? If you just answer the question, that's awesome, but if you have any web sites that were sources can you link to them?

Best answer:
Answer by GeoffGAny lunar eclipse is visible over about half the Earth. Partial solar eclipses are also visible over a large area. The solar eclipse in 2017 should be visible as a partial eclipse in both California and New Jersey, but when an eclipse is that close, it's worth driving to the path of totality to see it as a total eclipse. That's certainly what I plan to do. A total eclipse is just SO much better than a partial eclipse!

May 20, 2012, Annular Solar Eclipse: how it will look from San Diego. Never Look at the Sun without appropriate eye protection!!!! It begins at around 5:28p, reaches maximum at around 6:45p and ends at sunset. Annular means that the moon is near a far point in it's orbit, so that at its maximum coverage (in Northern California) a "ring of sun" will be visible around the moon. Here in San Diego, it misses to the side. Still a pretty good time!

Q&A: Venus transit -very easy way to make safety glasses etc?

Question by lucia: Venus transit -very easy way to make safety glasses etc?
I am not at all good at these things and never could see any events like these because I couldn't get any method to work and didn't understand where to look. When I was a kid I got so frustrated during a solar eclipse that I just looked directly at the sun. Don't want to do that again..I am not scientific at all but want to see this! Thanks everyone for any easy suggestions!!

Answer by Star DustFind a local welders' supply store. Buy a replacement filter for a welder's mask with a rating no less than #14. The transit of Venus will show as a small, black dot "on" the sun's face.

What happens with the moon on the other side of the Earth where a solar eclipse is not occurring?

Question by CL2710: What happens with the moon on the other side of the Earth where a solar eclipse is not occurring?
I want to know what happens with the moon during a solar eclipse, BUT on the side of the Earth where the eclipse is not occurring, for example if a solar eclipse is visible on North America, what happens in China, Europe, etc. with the moon, is there no moon, or what?
Thank you!

Best answer:
Answer by Geoff GThe Moon is in orbit around the Earth. During a solar eclipse it is between the Earth and the Sun. So there is no Sun or Moon on the other side of the Earth. There's nothing unusual about this -- it happens many times during the month.

May 21, 2012 Millions Take A Seat To Watch Sun's Spectacle Over Earth. Millions of viewers across the US and Asia were able to see the sun and moon's performance on Sunday, while others battled clouds and bad weather. Watchers from the Western US towards eastern Asia were able to look up towards the sky and see the annular eclipse, which is when the moon passes in front of the sun leaving just a golden ring around its edges. Viewing parties could be found across the West Coast in the US, while other skywatchers gathered along the beaches in California to view the solar treat. The lunar-solar alignment was visible in Asia early Monday, before it moved and was seen in parts of the western US late Sunday afternoon. The eclipse was broadcast on live television in Tokyo, where an eclipse of this type had not been seen since 1939. A Japanese zoo said some of its ring-tailed lemurs climbed up and jumped between trees and poles during the eclipse, which is a behavior that is typically seen being done in the evening. Doctors warned about eye injuries from watching the eclipse without using the proper equipment. Special glasses are needed in order to view the sun for moments like this. Photographers also needed to use solar filters when snapping images of the event, because the Sun can actually damage the sensor inside the camera. Sunday's eclipse lasted for 3 1/2 hours, as the moon followed an 8500-mile path across the sun, with the big "ring of fire" moment only lasting for about ...
