Stubborn clouds that many feared would ruin the view parted - somewhat - in north Queensland, defying forecasts of a total eclipse-viewing bust and relieving spectators who had fanned out to glimpse the celestial phenomenon. "Immediately before, I was thinking, 'Are we gonna see this?' And we just had a fantastic display - it was just beautiful," said Terry Cuttle of the Astronomical Association of Queensland, who has seen a dozen total solar eclipses over the years. "And right after it finished, the clouds came back again. It really adds to the drama of it." Spectators whooped and clapped with delight as the moon passed between the sun and Earth, leaving a slice of the continent's northeast in sudden darkness. Starting just after dawn, the eclipse cast its 150-kilometer (95-mile) shadow in Australia's Northern Territory, crossed the northeast tip of the country and was swooping east across the South Pacific, where no islands are in its direct path. Q&A: Is it possible for there to be a full moon at night then the very next day have a full solar eclipse?
Question by a t: Is it possible for there to be a full moon at night then the very next day have a full solar eclipse?
I watched the movie Apocalypto by mel gibson a while back and this happened in the movie. When I was watching it I didn't think this was possible but wasn't sure. There was a full moon at night (while the main character was running from those in pursuit) then the next day after he had been caught there was a full solar eclipse.
Best answer:
Answer by Dr BobNo. A lunar eclipse always occurs at full moon, and a solar eclipse at new moon, so they must be separated by at least about 14 or 15 days.
Sounds like a case of literary (or cinematographic) license.

Scores of amateur stargazers and scientists will travel long distances for the eclipse, which will last for about five minutes. The eclipse will first appear in the Gulf of Khambhat just north of Mumbai. It will move east across India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China before hitting the Pacific. The eclipse will cross some southern Japanese islands and will last be visible from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. Elsewhere, a partial eclipse will be visible across much of Asia. The previous total eclipse, in August 2008, lasted two minutes and 27 seconds. This one will last six minutes and 39 seconds at its maximum point. Alphonse Sterling, a Nasa astrophysicist who will be following the eclipse from China, scientists are hoping data from the eclipse will help explain solar flares and other structures of the sun and why they erupt. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. At least two and up to five solar eclipses can occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of them ...

Millions of devotees flocked to Indias holy city of Varanasi to watch the eclipse and take a holy dip in the river. Unfortunately, a woman was killed and four injured in the mad rush to get there. Thousands of devotees gathered at the banks of river Ganga to watch the solar eclipse on Wednesday (July 22). The stampede of people killed a woman and injured four others. [Jagdeesh, Local]: "The accident took place at 8:30 am when people started running helter-skelter. Eight to ten people got trampled, two died and four were injured." The police believed that the woman died from suffocation and not from being trampled on. [PC Meena, Deputy Inspector General, Varanasi]: "Due to suffocation, one woman named Ganga Devi died. Four to five others are injured and there is nothing else." The eclipse began at 5:28 am local time in India and peaked for 6 minutes, 39 seconds. A solar eclipse is spiritually sacred for many Indians. Devotees from across the country take baths in rivers, a holy act believed to bring good fortune and release from the cycle of life and death. But others believe that an eclipse brings bad luck and expectant mothers may have complicated pregnancies or have miserable children. According to the US space agency NASA, the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century was visible in a roughly 250 km-wide (155 miles) corridor, as it traveled half the globe and passed through India and China.

Looks like there's an annular eclipse visible across a good chunk of northern California in May 2012, so San Francisco ought to have a decent view of that one. And a total eclipse over Oregon in August 2017.
In 2106 there's a total eclipse pretty much right over San Francisco or perhaps San Jose (I'm not 100% sure of the geography of California).
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEatlas/SEatlas3/SEatlas2101.GIF
Is that soon enough?
I'm just hoping for one close enough to North America to make it feasible to travel to. I'm in the Eastern US and like you it seems like we never get them. It looks like the 2017 one is the one I should aim for.

North America's next solar eclipse is in 2017, I want to watch it. But why do I need to put on dimming glasses? Isn't the sunlight being blocked out by the moon enough to not do any harm?
Best answer:
Answer by J. Frost"Isn't the sunlight being blocked out by the moon enough to not do any harm?"
No, theres still enough light to damage your eyes. Not so-much when the moon completely obscures the sun, but in the transition phases, where the sun is only partially covered. Its easy to not notice the damage being done.

Can a solar eclipse happen at night?
Question by Elfie: Can a solar eclipse happen at night?
I know that a solar eclipse is when the moon passes in front of the sun, so does that mean a solar eclipse cannot happen at night? Can a lunar eclipse happen at night?
Best answer:
Answer by campbelp2002Yes, because half of Earth is in night all the time. But which half changes all the time. So during every eclipse it is night somewhere on Earth and daytime somewhere else on Earth. The same with a lunar eclipse.

Question by George: Whats the time frame to catch the eclipse?
As most of you know, there will be an eclipse May 20, 2012. My question is, what time will it occur in my part of the world? I live in California.
Best answer:
Answer by YikesAll times Universal Time.
The shadow passes just south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands as the central track slowly curves to the southeast. After a 7000 kilometre-long ocean voyage lasting nearly 2 hours, the antumbra finally reaches land again along the rugged coastlines of southern Oregon and northern California (Figure 2) at 01:23 UT (May 20 local time).
Redding, CA lies 30 kilometres south of the central line. Nevertheless, it still experiences an annular phase lasting 4 1/2 minutes beginning at 01:26 UT. It is already late afternoon along this section of the eclipse path. The Sun's altitude is 20° during the annular phase and decreasing as the track heads southeast. Central Nevada, southern Utah, and northern Arizona are all within the annular path.
By the time the antumbra reaches Albuquerque, NM (01:34 UT), the central duration is still 4 1/2 minutes, but the Sun's altitude has dropped to 5°. As its leading edge reaches the Texas Panhandle, the shadow is now an elongated ellipse extending all the way to Nevada. Seconds later, the antumbra begins its rise back into space above western Texas as the track and the annular eclipse end.

Satan will place in man's mind the idea to conquer and to rob, steal, destroy in a greater magnitude. Satan will unleash the spirit of war on MY Children to a greater degree. You have been warned. Q&A: How many solar ecliples in Miami since 1960?
Question by Dan in Miami: How many solar ecliples in Miami since 1960?
I'm talking total eclipse or near total solar, visible from Miami, not Mexico or Canada, MIAMI, since 1960?
Best answer:
Answer by imdashtiMiami witnessed 21 solar eclipses since 1960, all of which were seen as partial eclipses. The greatest eclipse was around noon of 7 March 1970 when the eclipse observed was at 83%. In fact, the total eclipse was so close it was seen in Florida in places such as Lake City, Live Oak and Perry. Here's a list of all 21 elipses witnessed in Miami since 1960 along with percentage of eclipse observed:
1. At sunrise of 31 July 1962 (11%)
2. Afternoon of 20 July 1963 (38%)
3. Early morning of 12 November 1966 (2%)
4. Afternoon of 11 September 1969 (9%)
5. Around noon of 7 March 1970 (83%)
6. Afternoon of 10 July 1972 (29%)
7. At sunrise of 30 June 1973 (less than 1%)
8. Early morning of 24 December 1973 (39%)
9. Morning of 13 December 1974 (25%)
10. Afternoon of 12 October 1977 (32%)
11. Around noon of 26 Febuary 1979 (32%)
12. Afternoon of 10 August 1980 (1%)
13. Around noon of 30 May 1984 (66%)
14. Afternoon of 3 October 1986 (31%)
15. Afternoon of 11 July 1991 (43%)
16. Around noon of 10 May 1994 (40%)
17. Early afternoon of 29 April 1995 (5%)
18. Around noon of 26 February 1998 (39%)
19. Around noon of 25 December 2000 (20%)
20. Close to sunset of 14 December 2001 (53%)
21. Afternoon of 8 April 2005 (35%)
The last total eclipse seen in Miami was close to sunset of 21 February 1803, but since then four eclipses came close to total eclipse in December 1825 (97%), April 1846 (91%), July 1878 (93%) and June 1918 (95%). The next total eclipse in Miami will be in August 2045. Until then, Miami will see 11 partial eclipses, the greatest of which will be in January 2038 at 81%. Within the next decade, the city will witness three partial solar eclipse at sunrise of 3 Novemebr 2013 (34%), close to sunset of 23 October 2014 (5%) and in early afternoon of 21 August 2017 (78%).

What is the believed time when spirit activity is at its highest?
Question by goo_head_83: What is the believed time when spirit activity is at its highest?
I have heard conflicting arguments between midnight and 3am being the time when spirit activity is highest. What is the leading belief of when activity is at its highest? Why is it at its highest at this time and no other time? What evidence has been collected to prove this is the peak time?

Answer by El Nahual JusticieroSome spirits are more comfortable to make themselves present at night time, and others only come if you summon them properly, but spirits seem to be more active on Halloween, Walpurgis Night (April 30), and in the Equinox and Solstice days, this year the next Equinox will be on Sep 22 at 21:18.

Halloween Trump Card, Spirit Lights! Here is how to make them: Get yourself a few glass jars... or just glasses they work as well. Then head over to the hardware store and pick up some solar powered garden lamps. They are CHEAP! They only cost about 1-2 bucks! Incredible! If you have some halloween hair dye lying around, great! If not, go grab a .50 bottle and cover the inside of the with it. When done attach the top of the garden lamp to the jar and you now have glowing spirit light which will be charged by the power of the sun. Twitter: twitter.com

What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
Question by AY0116: What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
There is a total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I don't know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?
Best answer:
Answer by Wild BillThe eclipse actually reduces the light pollution from the Sun to the Earth allowing us to see the brightest objects in the sky such as Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. When the eclipse is over they will fade into the wild blue sky!

I read it a few years ago, and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. It's about a lunar or solar eclipse. What is the astrological impact of having so many consecutive solar and lunar eclipses?
Question by ḯґḯṧℌ ẘґ☤ṧ⊥ ẘ@☂ḉ♄: What is the astrological impact of having so many consecutive solar and lunar eclipses?
in the next few months we'll have several Solar and Lunar eclipses, one right after another.
June 1 solar eclipse in Gemini
June 15 lunar eclipse in Sagittarius
July 1 solar eclipse in Cancer
These intermixed with a Full moon in Capricorn (July 14ish), new moon in Leo (July 30)
What is the impact of all this activity?
Best answer:
Answer by MichelleThere really isn't enough room to answer this as well as I'd like, so I'll beg your indulgence to give you a taste of what else you can explore after I say some of this.
Eclipses can tell you quite a bit about things going on in your life. For example, not just the Sun and Moon, but even the other planet will help you to see some pictures you may or may not like to see. I still remember one eclipse in particular when Saturn opposed my Mars in my chart. I'll tell you it was by far one of the most miserable experiences in my life, and it kept coming back to haunt me each and every time that degree was touched by transit until the next eclipse rolled by. I no longer remember if it was a Solar or Lunar Eclipse, and in the broader scope of this explanation, it doesn't really matter.
If it takes place during a Solar Eclipse, then you will see this kind of event based on tension or whatever is relevant to the planetary "exchange" with your natal chart each time that degree is touched till the next eclipse of the same type comes into play. You want to take into consideration which houses will be affected as well as the points of your natal chart that will be touched, and note that the greater impact is *usually* going to be with the Sun, but don't ignore the Lunar Eclipse. That too is important.
In 2000, there were 3 eclipses in one month, just as there will be this time. Two weeks before the Solar Eclipse on July 1, 2000, I had a major head injury that required stitches to repair a severed artery. The transiting Moon was opposing the Solar Eclipse point. During the week of the incoming Lunar Eclipse on July 16, I was robbed of all our possessions. Luckily, my children and I weren't there. And on July 31 that year, there was another Solar Eclipse, and I ended up with a gift of over $ 500.
Also be aware that your Pre-Natal Eclipse Points are important. The Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse Point appears to be connected to "fated" encounters with people and events. The Pre-Natal Lunar Eclipse Point requires a bit more attentiveness to see how it affects you. It appears to be linked more broadly through all of the planets in your chart, whichever one is being touched by that eclipse.
Hope this helps a bit.

Q&A: What's the difference between solar and lunar eclipses? Land and sea breezes?
Question by Rad R: What's the difference between solar and lunar eclipses? Land and sea breezes?
I lost it in my notes. LOL. Please help me compare the similarities and differences between solar and lunar eclipses and land and sea breezes!
Thanks, peace!
Best answer:
Answer by NogaA solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. At least two and up to five solar eclipses can occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of them being total eclipses.Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra.
A lunar eclipse is an eclipse which occurs whenever the moon passes behind the earth such that the earth blocks the suns rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, there is always a full moon the night of a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes.
Land breeze: At night, the land cools off quicker than the ocean due to differences in their specific heat values, which forces the dying of the daytime sea breeze. If the land cools below that of the adjacent sea surface temperature, the pressure over the water will be lower than that of the land, setting up a land breeze as long as the environmental surface wind pattern is not strong enough to oppose it. If there is sufficient moisture and instability available, the land breeze can cause showers or even thunderstorms, over the water. Overnight thunderstorm development offshore due to the land breeze can be a good predictor for the activity on land the following day, as long as there are no expected changes to the weather pattern over the following 12–24 hours. This is mainly because the strength of the land breeze is weaker than the sea breeze. The land breeze will die once the land warms up again the next morning.
Sea Breeze: (or onshore breeze) is a wind from the sea that develops over land near coasts. It is formed by increasing temperature differences between the land and water which create a pressure minimum over the land due to its relative warmth and forces higher pressure, cooler air from the sea to move inland. Generally, air temperature gets cooler relative to nearby locations as one moves closer to a large body of water.

Lunar eclipses usually last anywhere from like 1-3 hours, whereas solar eclipses are just a few minutes long. Why is this?

This lead to the ancient snake cults, the Ouroboros, and even creating eclipse predicting calculators such as Stonehenge, the Antikythera Mechanism, and many others. www.twitter.com On August 1, a total solar eclipse was visible in parts of Canada, northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia, and China. The eclipse swept across Earth in a narrow path that begins in Canada's northern territory of Nunavut and ends in northern China's Silk Road region at sunset. An eclipse of the sun occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun. When the moon's shadow falls on Earth, people within that shadow see the moon block a portion of the sun's light. The moon's shadow has two parts, an umbra and a penumbra. The umbra is the "inner" part of the moon's shadow. The penumbra is the moon's faint "outer" shadow. More efficient cells can be bought from spectrolab.com , but understand that they are MUCH more expensive. Last I checked, they were hundreds of times (yes hundreds) more expensive per watt than crystalline silicon.

What time would I need to be up to see the lunar eclipse this December?
Question by : What time would I need to be up to see the lunar eclipse this December?
So I found out that on December 21 2010, there will be a visible lunar eclipse. I really wanna stay up and see it but I don't know what time the eclipse will be visible from where I live in Southern California. Does anyone know?
Best answer:
Answer by Anne MarieHi Y!
The time you'll want to look for Monday night's eclipse is 10:33 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, the moment when the partial eclipse begins.
It takes just over an hour for the earth's shadow to completely engulf the moon, which means that totality arrives at 11:41 p.m. PST and then lasts for another hour and 12 minutes.
Why are others saying December 21st when in fact it's Monday night? The official way the dates of eclipses are reckoned follows Greenwich Mean Time, the time zone of England, and this eclipse indeed happens on Tuesday morning the 21st GMT, and indeed Tuesday evening in New Zealand. In North America, though, it's Monday night, although the eclipse will run past midnight over most of the continent.
You may see some writers giving earlier times for the official start of the eclipse. They're not wrong, technically, but these earlier times are not helpful, and you will not see any eclipse until 10:33 p.m. Pacific Time.
A penumbral eclipse starts at 9:28 p.m. Monday night. A penumbral eclipse means that an observer watching from the moon would see the beginning of a partial eclipse of the sun by the earth. During a partial eclipse of the sun, the amount of light reaching the moon is slightly reduced, much as happens here when we start a partial solar eclipse.
Watching from earth, though, you won't notice anything happening during the penumbral eclipse. If you went out looking at 9:28, you'd likely just grouse that you'd been given wrong information, and disappointedly go to bed. You'll see only a normal full moon if you were to go out looking before 10:33 p.m. PST.
(Actually, if you look carefully, you may be able to notice signs of the deepening penumbral phase in the last few minutes before the start of the partial eclipse at 10:33 p.m. PST. In those last few minutes, the lower left part of the moon is only receiving a fraction of its normal sunlight. It would look to you as though the left "cheek" of the man in the moon (facing from earth) were in need of a shave. It's nothing like the start of the partial eclipse, though.)
This eclipse is shallow, as total lunar eclipses go. That means that during totality, the moon will remain a coppery red. Some total eclipses are deeper, and the moon darkens to the point where you might not even notice it if you didn't know where to look. This eclipse is not one of these.
Total eclipses of the moon occur in runs, every six months or so, usually with three or four total

Answer by NemesisI live right next to a wind farm thats quiet and its brilliant, they also have lovely plants surrounding them, erm, I believe it would be similar to a solar farm, my friend in Kansas lives next to one, and house prices rose 0.7%, hardly anything and it has lowered his electricity bill incredibally, also vegetation hasnt lowered or increased its remained the same.

Answer by HerbOn July 23, 2008 Edgar Mitchell was interviewed on Kerrang Radio by Nick Margerrison. Mitchell claimed the Roswell crash was real and that aliens have contacted humans several times, but that governments have hidden the truth for 60 years stating, "I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet, and the UFO phenomenon is real." In reply, a spokesman for NASA stated, "NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe. Dr Mitchell is a great American, but we do not share his opinions on this issue."[9][10]
. Mitchell also claims to have subsequently received confirmation from an unnamed intelligence officer at the Pentagon.[11][12]
