Can I look at the sun through a telescope if I wear eclipse shades?

Question by JulyBeetle: Can I look at the sun through a telescope if I wear eclipse shades?
That is, is it safe? I have eclipse/solar shades that will protect my eyes; so is it safe to look through a telescope or binoculars at the sun if I wear the shades while doing so?
thanks for all the great answers so far!
*facepalm* okay, I'll have to figure out a way to rig the protective lens to the front of the scope. im also gonna try the pinhole technique

The telescope concentrates the sun's energy into a point, it'll melt the eclipse shades, almost instantly!

Better to figure out how to mount the shades in front of the telescope, where they can do the most good.
