How do I know what time the Lunar Eclipse will take place?

Question by Rain Dancer: How do I know what time the Lunar Eclipse will take place?
Tonight is the lunar eclipse and I would like to see it, but I cant find anything that will give me a time to shoot for. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Best answer:
Answer by Dr BobThere will be nothing to see. It's such a minor penumbral eclipse that the moon will simply look like an ordinary full moon.

Here are the times:
7:04:17 PM EDT eclipse begins
8:39:10 PM EDT maximum eclipse
10:14:09 PM EDT eclipse ends

The moon will be up for much of the eclipse on the east coast of the US; on the west coast, however, the moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse.

If you had precise measuring equipment, you might be able to detect a slight gradation of brightness, but you won't see anything with your naked eye.

Here's the NASA information for this eclipse:

Q&A: Is something going on astrologically lately that is causing extreme anger and frustration among people?

Question by :*: Is something going on astrologically lately that is causing extreme anger and frustration among people?
maybe something with the moon, idk.
i need answers, like no joke
does anyone notice such change in people's behavior? or is it just me?
everyone's on edge, stressing, blowing things out of proportion, ready to erupt, or losing it in general.
yeah something's been going on for the past 3 days or so till today and it just continues to escalate
i don't quite understand all that astrological information, though it does answer the question. if anyone could break it down and perhaps put it into simpler terms that'd be great.

Beautiful orrery(solar system model) avaiable in : www.orrerystore.com .NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the Moon slipping in front of the face of the Sun on March 4, 2011. This view is in the far ultraviolet and shows lots of solar activity like sunspots (which are bright in the UV) and prominences. The Moon appears to change direction because SDO is orbiting the Earth. This is difficult to explain using just words, so I have created a diagram on my blog. It's the same effect that makes planets seem to reverse direction over several days (called "retrograde motion") or race cars seem to move left-to-right on the near side of the racetrack and right-to-left on the far side.Credit: NASAMovie created using Helioviewer: helioviewer.org

What happens with the moon on the other side of the Earth where a solar eclipse is not occurring?

Question by CL2710: What happens with the moon on the other side of the Earth where a solar eclipse is not occurring?
I want to know what happens with the moon during a solar eclipse, BUT on the side of the Earth where the eclipse is not occurring, for example if a solar eclipse is visible on North America, what happens in China, Europe, etc. with the moon, is there no moon, or what?
Thank you!

Best answer:
Answer by Geoff GThe Moon is in orbit around the Earth. During a solar eclipse it is between the Earth and the Sun. So there is no Sun or Moon on the other side of the Earth. There's nothing unusual about this -- it happens many times during the month.

A total solar eclipse plunged northern Queensland into darkness for two minutes, delighting crowds packed on the beach in Cairns. Australians donned protective glasses as the clouds parted to allow them to witness one of nature's greatest phenomena -- a total eclipse of the sun. All eyes and cameras turned to the heavens over tropical north Queensland as the moon began moving between the Earth and the sun, like a small bite which gradually increases in size. Cloud cover threatened to spoil the party and huge cheers erupted when they parted to give tens of thousands of eclipse hunters a perfect view of totality -- when the moon completely covers the sun and a faint halo or corona appears. The path of the eclipse got under way shortly after daybreak when the moon's shadow, or umbra, fell in the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park in the Northern Territory, about 155 miles east of Darwin. The umbra then moved eastward before alighting in north Queensland -- one of the few places it could be viewed by humans and where tourists and scientists flocked to witness the region's first total solar eclipse in 1300 years. Total Solar Eclipse Australia 2012 UFO sighting? the planet Nibiru? A strange phenomenon? During the last total solar eclipse in 2012 a massive object appears between the moon and the sun the object is four times the size of Earth. As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. This can happen only atnew moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth. On 2012 November 13/14, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. Over the course of 3.1 hours, the Moon's umbra travels along a path approximately 14500 kilometres long covering 0.46% of Earth's surface area. What is the astrological impact of having so many consecutive solar and lunar eclipses?

Question by ḯґḯṧℌ ẘґ☤ṧ⊥ ẘ@☂ḉ♄: What is the astrological impact of having so many consecutive solar and lunar eclipses?
in the next few months we'll have several Solar and Lunar eclipses, one right after another.
June 1 solar eclipse in Gemini
June 15 lunar eclipse in Sagittarius
July 1 solar eclipse in Cancer

These intermixed with a Full moon in Capricorn (July 14ish), new moon in Leo (July 30)

What is the impact of all this activity?

Best answer:
Answer by MichelleThere really isn't enough room to answer this as well as I'd like, so I'll beg your indulgence to give you a taste of what else you can explore after I say some of this.

Eclipses can tell you quite a bit about things going on in your life. For example, not just the Sun and Moon, but even the other planet will help you to see some pictures you may or may not like to see. I still remember one eclipse in particular when Saturn opposed my Mars in my chart. I'll tell you it was by far one of the most miserable experiences in my life, and it kept coming back to haunt me each and every time that degree was touched by transit until the next eclipse rolled by. I no longer remember if it was a Solar or Lunar Eclipse, and in the broader scope of this explanation, it doesn't really matter.

If it takes place during a Solar Eclipse, then you will see this kind of event based on tension or whatever is relevant to the planetary "exchange" with your natal chart each time that degree is touched till the next eclipse of the same type comes into play. You want to take into consideration which houses will be affected as well as the points of your natal chart that will be touched, and note that the greater impact is *usually* going to be with the Sun, but don't ignore the Lunar Eclipse. That too is important.

In 2000, there were 3 eclipses in one month, just as there will be this time. Two weeks before the Solar Eclipse on July 1, 2000, I had a major head injury that required stitches to repair a severed artery. The transiting Moon was opposing the Solar Eclipse point. During the week of the incoming Lunar Eclipse on July 16, I was robbed of all our possessions. Luckily, my children and I weren't there. And on July 31 that year, there was another Solar Eclipse, and I ended up with a gift of over $ 500.

Also be aware that your Pre-Natal Eclipse Points are important. The Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse Point appears to be connected to "fated" encounters with people and events. The Pre-Natal Lunar Eclipse Point requires a bit more attentiveness to see how it affects you. It appears to be linked more broadly through all of the planets in your chart, whichever one is being touched by that eclipse.

Hope this helps a bit.

The last total solar eclipse until 2015, with the moon crossing in front of the sun in a celestial event that will ultimately send the moon's shadow on a three-hour trek across Earth's surface, starting in northern Australia. Despite some clouds, the beginning of today's total solar eclipse was clearly visible as the moon edged between the Sun and Earth, appearing to take a bite out of our star as seen by thousands of observers in Cairns, Australia, where several webcasts were broadcasting the event.

The Mayan calendar ends December 21, 2012. It's the end of something called the Long Cycle. As soon as it ends, a new one begins. They just didn't record it. It's like the end of the year. The world doesn't end when there are no more days in the year, a new year just starts instead.

***Best Solar Eclipse Footage On Youtube*** Annular Solar Eclpise.. Eclipse 2012 For one night, millions of eyes look up to the 'Ring of Fire.' Millions around the world are set to watch the annular solar eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges, which will be visible to wide areas across Asia Monday morning, parts of the western United States and even some parts of Mexico will catch a glimpse. Parts of eastern Asia were being treated to a solar spectacle as the moon slid across the sun, creating a "ring of fire." Sky-watchers in the western US awaited their turns as the rare phenomenon was due to move over the Pacific and toward them later Sunday. Scientists cautioned would-be viewers everywhere to be very careful because the sun's damaging rays will remain powerful even during the annular solar eclipse. The advice: Either wear specially designed protective eyewear or attend a viewing event — at a planetarium or amateur astronomy club, for example — to avoid risk of serious eye injury. Local weather permitting, the solar spectacle was first visible in parts of eastern Asia around dawn Monday, local time. If skies were clear enough, early risers there were able to catch the ring eclipse.

When will the next total solar eclipse be viewable in Texas?

Question by Carefree Alpaca!: When will the next total solar eclipse be viewable in Texas?
I'd also like to know what part of Texas it would cross over. I know we had one where I am about 10-15 years ago, but I'm trying to figure the odds of me seeing one in my lifetime.

Thanks in advance!

Answer by Anne MarieHi Tex!

You don't have all that long to wait! The total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 will sweep across Texas in a wide band. Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and Waco lie in the path of totality, which just brushes San Antonio. Those from Texarkana to Del Rio and most of the Texas Hill Country also see the total eclipse. The rest of the state gets to see a partial eclipse that morning.

There are a few other solar eclipses of note over the next sixteen years, but none will actually be total in Texas.

1) If you happen to be in Lubbock, you'll see an annular eclipse of the sun the evening of May 20, 2012. In an annular eclipse, the moon moves completely across the solar disc, but since the moon is in the part of its orbit that carries it farthest from earth, it won't be large enough to completely cover the sun. A ring of sunlight remains visible throughout. The rest of Texas sees the start of a partial eclipse at sunset that evening, 4 1/2 years from now.

2) You can see a shallow partial eclipse the afternoon of October 23, 2014. Only about 50% of the sun will be covered in the panhandle, less than that in the rest of the state.

3) There is a total solar eclipse in Missouri on August 21, 2017 you could see. But it will be only a partial eclipse in Texas. About 80% of the solar disc is covered in north Texas, dwindling to 60% in the Rio Grande valley.

4) Less than six months before the total eclipse of 2024, most of south Texas sees an annular eclipse, the morning of October 24, 2023. San Antonio, Odessa, and Corpus Christi lie in the path of maximum eclipse, which will also brush Lubbock again. Places along the eastern border of New Mexico will see both annular eclipses, this and the one on May 20, 2012.

Question by greenstarbelly: Solar Eclipse in aquarius and astrological houses?
Okay, so the solar eclipse on monday in aquarius. Everywhere it says that for leos the eclipse is in their 7th house, cancers 8, geminis 9 and so forth. But when you look at your natal chart it say the eclipse is in a whole different house. Why is this?

Answer by Jojo LGood question, I hate the superficial astrology when all the ladies just asking about romance. So here's the fact, houses wheel rotate as well our needle clock. That's mean our houses will be different every single hour..just imagine it's a minute needle and planets is like the hour needle, got it? The difference is..some planets moving really slow like pluto or saturn, some of them moving fast like the moon.

What would cause a permenent total solar eclipse?

Question by Gatesy: What would cause a permenent total solar eclipse?
Im in the middle of doing a media class assignment and i have to make a low budget trailer for a disaster movie. i wondered if it was possible to have a permenant total solar eclipse, and what sort of thing would cause it?, i would love some ideas. .

Best answer:
Answer by urwumpeso far, only taking the sun away. by orbital mechanics you could create a long solar eclipse, but no permanent. A nuclear winter could engulf the whole Earth in clouds, shading the sun.

But as it is going to be a movie, feel free to be unrealistic, as long as you can manage three things:

1. Entertain.
2. Entertain.
3. Manage a suspension of disbelief: Make it impossible for people to question your logic before the movie is over.

Why does the moon change color, then disappear, and then go back to normal color without an eclipse?

Question by Matty-boi: Why does the moon change color, then disappear, and then go back to normal color without an eclipse?
On 8/15/10, I was watching the moon with my family and we noticed it was orange. It was originally a crescent moon, but it changed to a new moon, then back to a crescent. But, why did it do this when there really is no solar or lunar eclipse scheduled or the fact that it was a waxing crescent going to a new moon back to a waxing crescent?

If a solar eclipse is when the moon comes between the sun and earth, why is it still bad to look at with the naked eye? Wouldn't it protect your eyes from solar rays and radiation, etc? Please explain.

Answer by ChartlesBecause you have to stare at the sun. Which is bad. The moon will protect you from some of the damage, but it will not protect from all of it.

How to safely look at a solar eclipse?

Question by Diego Palma: How to safely look at a solar eclipse?
I want to know how to look at a solar eclipse because the one today is going to pass by where i live
And i would like to know if it will damage my eyes if i look at it
Can i see it through a camera?
Do sunglasses help?
Or is it something that is designated to look at the solar eclipse

Best answer:
Answer by TechwingYou need something like carbon-arc-welding glasses in order to view this type of eclipse safely. They should be at least shade #14.

You could photograph it with a digital camera as long as the camera has an electronic viewfinder and not an optical viewfinder. However, this may permanently damage the camera.

Another good way to see the eclipse is by using a special solar attachment on a telescope that projects an image of the sun onto a screen (NOT by looking directly into the telescope, which will produce blindness).

Sunglasses are not dark enough to help.

The only solar eclipses that can be safely viewed with the naked eye are total solar eclipses, when the sun is completely covered. This is not that type of eclipse. The sun's edge will still be visible during this eclipse, which makes it dangerous to look at with the naked eye. It also makes the eclipse far less impressive, since it doesn't get very dark and the portion of the sun that is visible is so bright that it makes everything else invisible.

My own opinion is that only a total solar eclipse is worth getting excited over. Partial and annular eclipses are a disappointment, as well as an eye hazard.

On Sunday, 11 July 2010 , a Total Eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow crosses the South Pacific Ocean where it makes no landfall except for Mangaia (Cook Islands) and Easter Island (Isla de Pascua). The path of totality ends just after reaching southern Chile and Argentina. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering the South Pacific and southern South America. As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon fully or partially covers the Sun as viewed from some location on Earth. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth. At least two, and up to five, solar eclipses occur each year; no more than two can be total eclipses.Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path traced by the Moon's umbra. A total solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon. Nevertheless, in ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens. A total solar eclipse can be

Advice on inexpensive astrophotography?

Question by Jubal Harshaw: Advice on inexpensive astrophotography?
I have an 8-inch Dob and am planning on getting into basic solar/moon/planet astrophotography. Would a webcam be the best choice (my budget being from 100-300 dollars)? If so, what tips do you have for me and what accessories should I buy (adapters, software, etc.) Be specific and thanks in advance.
So, basically, all you really need is a camera (with time-lapse feature, if that's the correct term) and an eye-piece adapter?

Best answer:
Answer by Search first before you ask itWebcam photography works best with a driven telescope (which a Dob isn't). I've liked using a good point-and-shoot with manual focus features such as most of Canon's "A" series model cameras.

TWIN GRAIL TO BOMB MOON = Dec. 17 at 19:28 UTC 2:28 pm EST = 20121217 REPORT BELOW: Full Screen, headphones & seat belts recommended! ♥ The Herschel space telescope is slated to be decommissioned next March as the observatory's supply of cryogenic helium will be depleted. One idea for "disposing" of the spacecraft was to have it impact the Moon, a la the LCROSS mission that slammed into the Moon in 2009, and it would kick up volatiles at one of the lunar poles for observation by another spacecraft, such as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. However, that idea has been nixed in favor of parking Herschel in a HELIOCENTRIC orbit. There will be a double-barreled event as the twin GRAIL spacecraft will impact the moon's surface on 12-17- 2012. The 2 spacecraft are running out of fuel--Principal Investigator Maria Zuber said they have to do three maneuvers every day to keep the spacecraft from slamming into the Moon on their own -- and earlier this year the duo were lowered from their prime mission orbit of 55 kilometers above the Moon to 23 km, and this week were lowered to 11 km to enable even higher resolution data. It will mark a violent end to a mission that has produced the most high-resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbor. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale. Initially, the spacecraft flew about 35 miles above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles. About an hour before Monday's impact, they will ...

How widespread across the globe is an eclipse?

Question by havish: How widespread across the globe is an eclipse?
I am working on a project, and am wondering how visible a given solar eclipse would be on a global level.

I uploaded an image of a map with a particular eclipse that occurred (I circled it in red), but I need to know in which parts of the world the eclipse would be visible in.

Best answer:
Answer by bikenbeer2000The map you uploaded shows tracks of total and annular eclipses, but in general, the partial phase would be visible over a much wider area. An illustration is provided by the equivalent map for eclipses from 2001 to 2020:
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEatlas/SEatlas3/SEatlas2001.GIF compared with the map showing the visibility of partial and total phases for the eclipse of August 1st 2008:
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2008/TSE2008iau/TSE2008-fig01.GIF
Your eclipse goes back quite a long way (about 2700 years!) so I seriously doubt whether a partial phase map will be available on the Internet. One solution might be to look for a more recent eclipse with a similar track or I could run my planetarium program Starry Night for the year -712. I'll look into both these options and get back to you.

Additional notes:
OK the Starry Night planetarium program shows the region of partial eclipse as follows:
Draw a line upwards from the bottom of the map at 10 degrees east up to 50 degrees south. Then draw a line upwards and to the right across the Indian Ocean, keeping parallel with the annular track and passing below South Africa, Madagascar and Sri Lanka and crossing just above the Malaysian peninsula and Cambodia. The line then folllows the track of the -0719 Feb 22 eclipse until 160 degrees east. From there, draw a line straight down to the bottom, passing between Australia and New Zealand.
The Starry Night program doesn't actually show a map, but gives a 'real time' view of the progress of the eclipse across the earth, so I can't convey a map to you and this explanation will have to do - long-winded though it may be.

There is a total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I don't know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?

From Wikipedia: A transit of Venus across the Sun takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth, becoming visible against (and hence obscuring a small portion of) the solar disk. During a transit, Venus can be seen from Earth as a small black disk moving across the face of the Sun. The next transit of Venus will occur on 5 and 6 June 2012, and will be the last Venus transit this century; the prior transit took place on 8 June 2004. The previous pair of transits were in December 1874 and December 1882. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent disk is just smaller than the Sun's disk and the Sun appears as a brilliant ring. Is it possible for there to be a full moon at night then the very next day have a full solar eclipse?

Question by a t: Is it possible for there to be a full moon at night then the very next day have a full solar eclipse?
I watched the movie Apocalypto by mel gibson a while back and this happened in the movie. When I was watching it I didn't think this was possible but wasn't sure. There was a full moon at night (while the main character was running from those in pursuit) then the next day after he had been caught there was a full solar eclipse.

Best answer:
Answer by Dr BobNo. A lunar eclipse always occurs at full moon, and a solar eclipse at new moon, so they must be separated by at least about 14 or 15 days.

Sounds like a case of literary (or cinematographic) license.

Your five choices are Mars, Saturn, Europa(one of Jupiter's moons), Pluto and Venus. Please put them in order with your favourite one first. I need reasons for your answers too please.

Best answer:
Answer by arvind pi would move to mars first followed by venus and europa, saturn and finally to pluto, if am that much alive due to its distance, mars is achievable but i dont think i will be alive after reaching jupiter,......it would take years to reach the next planet.

What time can I see the partial eclipse?

Question by MissConfused: What time can I see the partial eclipse?
Yahoo said that the partial lunar eclipse is best seen in the central and western states. I live in Kansas and would like to see it, but it said at 6:17 a.m. EDT and I go by CDT time. So what time should I be able to see the partial eclipse?

Best answer:
Answer by StarryskyThat is the end of the eclipse. Most shadow is 4:38 AM PDT, which is 6:38 CDT, which is a bit after the moon sets in Kansas.

While not a full or even annular eclipse here in Santa Clarita, California, there were still some interesting views to be seen. Four different cameras were used, each running in timelapse mode... In the first several sequences we see intense orange images filmed with a Canon SX10-is, using its full optical zoom of 20x, which equates to about 560mm (35mm equiv.), and a disc cut from an old arc welding mask as a filter. Three large sunspots can be clearly seen in the sun's orb, as the moon takes a slow, ever increasing bite out of the solar disc. As the eclipse ends just before sunset, the sun darkens and then finally sets behind a very distant mountain range. Digital panning across the large image frame and wind buffeting the camera makes for some interesting "action" in these sequences... Next, (at 1:15 ) we see the sun's glare in a blue sky as the Canon 5D mk2 records the change in daylight level using fixed ISO, shutter and aperture. This sequence was filmed using a 17mm wide angle lens and Fotasy wide-band ND filter, set fairly low (perhaps 10-20) in its setting range, and includes the 1st half of the eclipse, from start to peak. An eclipse-shaped lens flare (an internal reflection of light between the glass lens elements) appears at 1:28 At 1:31 the view switches over to a GoPro Hero2, which recorded the entire event from start to sunset at 10-second intervals. Its automatic exposure compensated for the change in light level, but still managed another interesting view ...

Q&A: is there a possibility of having a solar eclipse in sanfrancisco?

Question by ferrariguy1000: is there a possibility of having a solar eclipse in sanfrancisco?
I hear so many solar eclipses over Asia and south America, but is there one predicted in the near future over San Fransisco?

Answer by Randy PLots of good info on NASA's eclipse web page.

Here's the solar eclipse page:

And here's a few summary maps. 2001-2020.

Looks like there's an annular eclipse visible across a good chunk of northern California in May 2012, so San Francisco ought to have a decent view of that one. And a total eclipse over Oregon in August 2017.

In 2106 there's a total eclipse pretty much right over San Francisco or perhaps San Jose (I'm not 100% sure of the geography of California).

Is that soon enough?

I'm just hoping for one close enough to North America to make it feasible to travel to. I'm in the Eastern US and like you it seems like we never get them. It looks like the 2017 one is the one I should aim for.

What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?

Question by AY0116: What do they mean when you can see planets during a total solar eclipse?
There is a total eclipse coming up in August for parts of Russia and China, there are other places as well but I don't know where. I was reading an article about how there will be four planets visible during the eclipse. What I want to know is, does the eclipse magnify these planets so you can view them with the naked eye or does it just expose the area of the planet in darkness long enough that you could view them through a telescope?

Best answer:
Answer by Wild BillThe eclipse actually reduces the light pollution from the Sun to the Earth allowing us to see the brightest objects in the sky such as Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. When the eclipse is over they will fade into the wild blue sky!
